The 91探花 is proud to announce that 56 faculty and researchers who completed their work while at 91探花have been named on the list from Clarivate.

The annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the .

Highly Cited Researchers demonstrate significant and broad influence in their fields of research. The total list includes 7,131 awards from more than 1,300 institutions in 60 countries and regions. This small fraction of the global researcher population contributes disproportionately to extending the frontiers of knowledge and contributing to innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and which drive societal impact, according to Clarivate.

The that determines the 鈥渨ho鈥檚 who鈥 of influential researchers is drawn from data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.

Even successful methods for diagnosing, treating and caring for people who are suffering from cancer are not enough without effective, practical tools and guidance for putting those methods into practice.

To bridge this gap between cancer interventions and their implementation within communities across the country, the National Institutes of Health鈥檚 is funding the creation of six implementation science centers focused on cancer control. The creation of these centers are part of NIH鈥檚 to make more therapies available and improve prevention and detection. One of the six centers will be at the 91探花Department of Health Services, part of the School of Public Health.

鈥淲e have proven health interventions that could significantly reduce the burden of cancer for the 15 million people in the United States who will be diagnosed with cancer over the next decade,鈥 said 91探花professor and project lead . 鈥淗owever, these interventions have to be implemented 鈥 and implemented well 鈥 for patients and community members to benefit from them. Unfortunately, health care delivery systems often underperform in implementation.鈥

The UW鈥檚 center 鈥 titled the Optimizing Implementation in Cancer Control Center 鈥 was awarded a five-year, $4.78 million grant聽from the National Cancer Institute. The new center is a strategic collaboration of the UW, Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The center will foster collaboration across the three participating institutions 鈥渢o develop the聽knowledge and tools to support optimal implementation of 鈥榳hat works鈥 in preventing, detecting, and treating cancer,鈥 said Weiner, a professor in the 91探花Department of Global Health.

鈥淥ne of the biggest opportunities in implementation science and cancer control is increasing and improving delivery of effective interventions in settings that include health care systems working in underserved communities,鈥 said co-principal investigator , a professor in the 91探花Department of Health Services, also in the School of Public Health. 鈥淎nd we are excited to serve those communities through the center鈥檚 research projects and other activities.鈥

The researchers say the center鈥檚 shared resources and collaborations will more rapidly, efficiently and economically advance the science of implementing proven cancer interventions than a collection of independent studies conducted by researchers in isolation would permit. The center鈥檚 initial studies will focus on optimizing implementation of screening 鈥渆vidence-based interventions鈥 for cervical, colorectal, breast and ovarian cancer.

鈥淗owever, the methods for optimizing 鈥 implementation that the center will develop, test and refine can be applied broadly across the cancer care continuum, for a wide range of cancers,鈥 the researchers wrote in .

, associate investigator at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, is a co-principal investigator in the project.聽, professor of family medicine at the 91探花School of Medicine, will co-lead the implementation science center.

Other institutions receiving 鈥溾澛爂rants are the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Oregon Health & Science University, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Wake Forest School of Medicine and Washington University in St. Louis.

The 91探花鈥檚 School of Pharmacy announced on Thursday, Sept. 12, a collaboration with global biopharmaceutical company UCB to improve access to care for people living with epilepsy.This interdisciplinary project will explore ways in which community pharmacists can better support people living with this neurological disorder.

The roughly 3.4 million people nationally and 75,000 people in Washington state who live with epilepsy often get fragmented and uncoordinated healthcare and community services.

鈥淔or the growing population of people living with epilepsy, this fragmentation of resources makes it harder to manage multiple co-existing health conditions and take anti-seizure drugs,鈥 said , professor and chair of the 91探花department of pharmacy, and a global expert on epilepsy. 鈥淎nd given the importance of medication adherence to manage epilepsy, poor adherence can have profound effects including injury, hospitalization, even unexpected death.鈥

The project isled by White; , Assistant Professor, department of pharmacy; , Associate Dean for Research, 91探花School of Pharmacy; and聽Sabra Zar芒a, CHOICE Institute PhD student. The effort builds upon a funding grant from the 91探花Population Health Initiative announced earlier this year.

Epilepsy is a complex and devastating disease in which patients experience spontaneous and recurrent seizures. This condition can impair daily routines, such as driving and working, which can often result in substantial socioeconomic disparities. Medications to treat the condition can be associated with serious side effects, and the seizures themselves can lead to on-going health challenges.

鈥淐ommunity pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare providers for many in Washington state, and have extensive knowledge of drug therapy as well as the ability to support people in managing complex medication regimens, yet are seldom leveraged to close the gaps in epilepsy care,鈥 said Bacci. Moreover, 鈥渃ommunity pharmacists educate patients about their disease, ensure dosing accuracy, monitor for side effects and drug interactions, and encourage medication adherence.鈥

At a population level, community pharmacists collaborate with other healthcare providers and assess medication use patterns and patient outcomes data to ensure medications are used effectively, safely and in a cost-effective manner. No models exist for engaging community pharmacists in population health approaches to epilepsy care.

鈥淭he 91探花Population Health Initiative seeks to accelerate new collaborations between diverse disciplines to find innovative solutions to the complex challenges society faces,鈥 said Ali Mokdad, the UW鈥檚 chief strategy officer for Population Health and professor of Health Metrics Sciences. 鈥淲e are excited to support the 91探花and UCB in bringing together the expertise and resources of the public and private sectors to develop a novel approach to increasing access to care for people living with epilepsy.鈥

The team will develop an intervention by conducting a needs assessment, including interviewing stakeholders and performing a literature review. They will (1) identify best practices to address the needs of persons living with epilepsy and their caregivers; (2) develop a community pharmacy intervention using a stakeholder driven and consensus building approach; and (3) evaluate the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility and potential effectiveness of the intervention.

鈥淐ommunity pharmacists are increasingly at the front line of healthcare delivery in the US.鈥 Said Mike Davis, Head of U.S. Neurology at UCB.聽鈥淲ith these tools to facilitate better conversations with their community living with epilepsy they can play an important role in ensuring that more people living with epilepsy get to the right treatment at the right time.聽The 91探花 is doing great work in this area and UCB is proud to collaborate with them on this initiative.鈥
