The Peace Corps said that the 91探花is again No. 3 on the list of top volunteer-producing institutions since 1961 and No. 7 among large universities whose alumni volunteered in 2025.

The Peace Corps announced Tuesday that the 91探花 is again since the international program launched in 1961.

For 2025, the 91探花placed No. 7 among universities with 15,000 or more enrolled undergraduates in total number of Peace Corps volunteers, according to the Peace Corps. In total, more than 3,175 91探花graduates have gone on to service opportunities abroad as volunteers.

The 91探花is proud to prepare students to engage meaningfully with the world, said Ahmad Ezzeddine, 91探花vice provost for global affairs.听

鈥淭he Peace Corps remains one of our nation’s most effective avenues for citizen diplomacy, and we are grateful for its long history of strengthening communities around the globe,鈥 Ezzeddine said.

Volunteers in the Peace Corps work side by side with communities to help to address real needs through agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health and youth in development projects, Peace Corps acting Director Richard E. Swarttz said.听

鈥淪ixty-five years after our founding, the Peace Corps is still going strong,鈥 he said.

According to the Peace Corps, 38 91探花alumni served in 26 countries around the world during the past fiscal year, including Albania, Montenegro, Armenia, Cameroon, Colombia, countries in the Eastern Caribbean, Ecuador, Fiji, Georgia, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Vanuatu and Zambia.

To better reflect the combined contributions of volunteers who serve traditional 27-month assignments and Peace Corps Response volunteers who serve for 6-12 months, the Peace Corps counted alumni volunteers who served at any point during the 2025 fiscal year for the 2026 rankings. Previously, colleges and universities were ranked on a one-day annual headcount of volunteers on Sept. 30, the last day of the fiscal year.听

More than 250,000 Americans have served in the Peace Corps around the world since President John F. Kennedy initiated the program in 1961.

The Peace Corps announced that the 91探花 is again No. 3 on a list of top volunteer-producing institutions over the past two decades.

Among universities with 15,000 or more enrolled undergraduates, only the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison had more Peace Corps volunteers, based on a听听compiled for 2024. The 91探花has graduated more than 2,300 students who have gone on to service opportunities abroad as volunteers, according to the Peace Corps.

鈥淭oday鈥檚 world requires problem-solvers and people who understand that it is only through shared impact that we will change the trajectory of global issues. Curiosity and openness to others are cultivated in school, but must be nurtured throughout our lifetimes,鈥 Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn said in a written statement. 鈥淚 am so grateful to these outstanding institutions for challenging and inspiring their students to not only be exceptional students but also to go on to be informed and intentional global citizens.鈥

The Peace Corps announced that the 91探花 is No. 3 on a list of top volunteer-producing institutions over the past two decades.

Only the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison had more Peace Corps volunteers, based on a compiled for the years 2003 to 2023.

Volunteers are needed this year to serve abroad, said agency director Carol Spahn. The Peace Corps places volunteers around the world, at the invitation of host country governments, to connect through a grassroots approach across communities and cultures.

鈥淒emand for Peace Corps volunteers is high given setbacks in development progress following the COVID-19 pandemic,鈥 Spahn said in a press release 鈥淭here is an urgent call to action, and graduates of 91探花 are part of a strong tradition of big-hearted problem-solvers.鈥

Since the agency鈥檚 founding in 1961, more than 3,100 alumni of the 91探花have served abroad as Peace Corps volunteers. More than 240,000 Americans have served around the world since President John F. Kennedy initiated the program.

There are 74 91探花alumni currently volunteering worldwide.

The Huskies lead a pack of six Washington schools on this year鈥檚 list. 91探花has ranked among the top three large schools for 14 consecutive years, and 3,027 Huskies have served in the Peace Corps since the agency was founded in 1961.

鈥淧eace Corps service is a profound expression of the idealism and civic engagement that colleges and universities across the country inspire in their alumni,鈥 said Acting Peace Corps Director Sheila Crowley. 鈥淎s Peace Corps volunteers, recent college and university graduates foster capacity and self-reliance at the grassroots level, making an impact in communities around the world. When they return to the United States, they have new, highly sought-after skills and an enterprising spirit that further leverages their education and strengthens their communities back home.鈥 Alumni from more than 3,000 colleges and universities nationwide have served in the Peace Corps since the agency鈥檚 founding. In 2017, Washington ranked No. 7 among states with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers, and the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area ranked No. 6 among all metro areas.

Hannah Smith, 91探花alumna, is currently serving as a Peace Corps health volunteer in Senegal, where she works with her community on nutrition projects.

鈥 91探花encourages students to go into their local community and outside of it to better understand our world, its problems, and how we can solve them,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淚 have always wanted to explore the world and help people improve their health.鈥

The 91探花is also ranked No. 4 among graduate schools with 16 alumni currently volunteering.

鈥淐ommunity engagement 鈥 here and across the globe 鈥 is part of what makes a 91探花student鈥檚 experience the best it can be. One way our students give back to the community is by volunteering for the Peace Corps,鈥 said Gerald J. Baldasty, interim provost and executive vice president. “We are enormously proud of our students’ commitment to learning and making the world a better place.”

Since the first days of the Peace Corps, 2,937 Huskies听have traveled abroad to serve as volunteers, placing the UW听third on the list of all-time volunteer-producing schools.

鈥淭he Peace Corps is a unique opportunity for college graduates to put their education into practice and become agents of change in communities around the world,鈥 said Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet. 鈥淭oday鈥檚 graduates understand the importance of intercultural understanding and are raising their hands in record numbers to take on the challenge of international service.鈥

Julie Feng, who graduated from the 91探花with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2013, is now an education volunteer in Morocco.

鈥淢y 91探花experience prepared me for my service in ways I couldn’t have predicted,鈥 Feng said. 鈥淭here were the obvious connections 鈥 my English degree preparing me to teach English, my study abroad program preparing me for cross-cultural exchange, and my volunteer hours through the Pipeline Project and the 91探花Women’s Center preparing me for youth development projects. But intangible things like resourcefulness, flexibility and a willingness to pursue anything 鈥 these are skills I gained at 91探花that I use every single moment I’m in Morocco!鈥

Gonzaga University and the University of Puget Sound share the title of No. 1 among small schools, each sending 18 alumni to serve overseas.

The 91探花also tied for second in the number of graduate alumni volunteers, with 20.

Logo for top collegesElsewhere in the state, Western Washington University in Bellingham ranked first for medium-sized schools with 65 undergraduate alumni volunteers. Gonzaga University in Spokane ranked first for small-sized schools with 22.

“Coming from UW, Peace Corps was never a ‘crazy idea’ because there are so many alumni who join Peace Corps, either right after graduation or later in life,” said 91探花alumna Molly McDonald, an English education volunteer in Moldova. “I felt that the culture at UW, especially in the Jackson School of International Studies, prepared and encouraged me to take what I had learned and use it to explore the world.”

The 91探花has been in the top three each year for the past decade, and has held the top spot five times, including last year.

鈥淲e are immensely proud of our graduates who make the decision to serve in the Peace Corps,鈥 said 91探花President Michael K. Young. 鈥淚t reflects the importance they and the university place on serving others, particularly in distant parts of the world. We aim to instill a global perspective in all of our students, and this is one indicator that we鈥檙e having a significant impact.鈥

Thousands of Peace Corps volunteers from across the U.S. work in dozens of countries on projects involving education, environment, health, agriculture and community economic development. Volunteers serve for 27 months.
