The 91探花鈥檚 graduate and professional degree programs were widely recognized as among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 2026 Best Graduate Schools released late Monday.

Young adults with psychosis tend to use cannabis at extremely high rates, and their symptoms can be exacerbated by long-term marijuana use. A team of 91探花 researchers is focused on this particular group.聽

Fifteen faculty members at the 91探花 have been elected to the Washington State Academy of Sciences for 2024. They are among 36 scientists and educators from across the state announced Aug. 1 as new members. Selection recognizes the new members鈥 鈥渙utstanding record of scientific and technical achievement, and their willingness to work on behalf of the academy to bring the best available science to bear on issues within the state of Washington.鈥

The state of Washington鈥檚 Extended Foster Care program 鈥 in which young adults ages 18-21 can continue to receive some support 鈥 could help even more people by expanding participation, providing greater flexibility in eligibility criteria, and extending benefits, according to a new report from the 91探花.

Recent recognition of the 91探花 includes the election of Andrew Meltzoff to the National Academy of Education, a lifetime achievement award for Dean of the School of Social Work Edwina Uehara and Ed Kolodziej selected as a Frontiers Planet Prize finalist.

After Washington became the first state to require suicide prevention training for health care providers, the 91探花 worked with experts and organizations to develop the All Patients Safe program. A new study shows how All Patients Safe helped providers of all specialties learn how to identify and respond to patients at risk of suicide.

In 2021, 91探花registrar Helen Garrett announced that, for the first time, the 91探花would allow graduates to use a chosen first name for their diplomas. The policy change was the result of efforts led by Vern Harner, a 91探花doctoral student in social work, and a change.org petition that earned over 30,000 signatures, demonstrating the power of the trans community.

A new 91探花 study finds that Black youth are more likely than white youth to be treated as 鈥渦sual suspects鈥 after a first encounter with police, leading to subsequent arrests over time. Even as white young adults report engaging in significantly more illegal behavior, Black young adults face more criminal penalties.

Cost of living is up in all Washington counties, for families of all sizes, according to the 2020 Self-Sufficiency Standard for Washington State, a report that identifies the amount of income needed to support families of various sizes without additional help from the government, community or other personal resources.

The future of our health and the health of the communities we live in relies, in many ways, on students in the health sciences. The education and experiences that future doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, social workers and public health experts receive will to a large degree shape how those professionals work and work together when solving problems affecting our health. 91探花researchers aimed to understand both the prevalence of discrimination events and how these events affect college students in their daily lives. Over the course of two academic quarters, the team compared students’ self-reports of unfair treatment to passively tracked changes in daily activities, such as hours slept, steps taken or time spent on the phone.

Sparked by a grant from the聽 91探花Population Health Initiative,聽the UW鈥檚 Center for One Health Research has created a series of pop-up聽galleries featuring autobiographical photographs made by people experiencing homelessness with their animal companions.
