The 91探花鈥檚 incoming classes were welcomed Sunday at the University鈥檚 42nd annual New Student Convocation inside Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.听 The ceremony was attended by thousands of students, family and friends.

The 91探花 welcomed its incoming class and their families on Sunday at the University鈥檚 annual New Student Convocation, which was held in Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

The incoming class is expected to consist of about 7,150 students. Official information about class size and make up is announced later in the quarter.

, associate professor, Comparative History of Ideas, was the featured speaker. A Scottish immigrant and first-generation college grad, Mackenzie, who uses they/she pronouns, joined the 91探花in 2002. In 2024, they received the University鈥檚 Distinguished Teaching Award, given to faculty who exemplify a commitment to inclusive teaching and serve as mentors to other faculty.

Tricia Serio, 91探花Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, was the featured speaker. Serio, who took office on Aug. 1, previously served as Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology.

“From this day forward, you are a Husky,” Serio told the crowd, which nearly filled the arena and spilled into overflow seating at Husky Stadium. “The next few years are just the start of that journey, but they will form a solid foundation that will support you for the rest of your lives.”

91探花President Ana Mari Cauce, members of the Board of Regents, the deans of the 16 schools and colleges, and faculty members also attended. Speakers, including Cauce, other administrators and student leaders, encouraged new Huskies to be curious, get involved, explore and challenge themselves.

One of the 91探花鈥檚 largest and most diverse incoming classes was welcomed Sunday at the University鈥檚 39th annual New Student Convocation, which returned to Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, for the first time since 2019. The ceremony set attendance records with more than 7,500 students, family and friends filling the arena to capacity.

The incoming class is expected to top out at around 7,250 students, with nearly 15% from underrepresented minorities and 23% first generation, or the first in the family to achieve a four-year degree, according to preliminary university data. Official census information is announced later in the quarter.

Barrington has joint appointments in the Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing in the School of Nursing and the departments of Epidemiology and of Health Systems and Population Health in the School of Public Health.

This year鈥檚 hybrid ceremony is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, on Rainier Vista, just south of the Drumheller Fountain. Students registering for the Convocation selected one of a limited number of in-person tickets or requested a virtual ticket to watch the hour-long ceremony via .

Convocation welcomes the entering class and officially marks the beginning of the academic year, with classes starting Sept. 29. At the suggestion of health officials, this year鈥檚 ceremony has been moved from Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion to the Rainier Vista lawn. That鈥檚 where about 1,200 students will attend in person, while the event is also streamed online to welcome other students, families, friends and the entire campus community.
