Most landslides in western Oregon triggered by heavy rainfall, not big earthquakes

Researchers at the 91探花, Portland State University and the University of Oregon have shown that deep-seated landslides in the central Oregon Coast Range are triggered mostly by rainfall, not by large offshore earthquakes. The open-access paper was published Sept. 16 in Science Advances. 鈥淕eomorphologists have long understood the importance of rainfall in triggering landslides, and our study is simply driving home just how important it is,鈥 said first author Sean LaHusen, who did the work as part of…

Marine animals live where ocean is most 鈥榖reathable,鈥 but ranges could shrink with climate change

New research shows that a wide variety of marine animals 鈥 from vertebrates to crustaceans to mollusks 鈥 already inhabit the maximum range of breathable ocean that their physiology will allow. The findings provide a warning about climate change: Since warmer waters will harbor less oxygen, some stretches of ocean that are breathable today for a given species may not be in the future.

The 91探花 mourns the loss of Bill Gates Sr.

Though Bill Gates, Sr., may have graduated from the 91探花 nearly 70 years ago, in many ways he never really left.

Gates was a standout Husky 鈥 as a Regent for 15 years, leader of ground breaking philanthropic campaigns and a recipient of numerous accolades, including the Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus Award in 2013. He loved Husky football and cheered on from Husky Stadium, Row K, Seat 32.

Gates died Monday. He was 94.

Four 91探花professors win 2021 Breakthrough Prize 鈥 so-called 鈥極scars of Science鈥

Four 91探花 professors were among the winners of the 2021 Breakthrough Prize, which recognizes groundbreaking achievements in the life sciences, fundamental physics and mathematics.

David Baker, a professor in the 91探花School of Medicine鈥檚 department of biochemistry, won the prize for life sciences, while a team of 91探花physics professors, including Eric Adelberger, Jens Gundlach and Blayne Heckel, earned the prize for fundamental physics.

Mask mandates delayed by nearly a month in Republican-led states, 91探花study finds

Political science researchers at the 91探花 examined the factors associated with statewide mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. When controlling for other factors, states with Republican governors delayed imposing broad indoor mask requirements by nearly a month.

91探花receives NSF funds for investment in an interdisciplinary quantum future

The National Science Foundation has awarded $3 million to establish a NSF Research Traineeship at the 91探花 for graduate students in quantum information science and technology. The new traineeship 鈥 known as Accelerating Quantum-Enabled Technologies, or AQET 鈥 will make the 91探花one of just 鈥渁 handful鈥 of universities with a formal, interdisciplinary QIST curriculum.

Weathering the tough times: Fossil evidence of 鈥榟ibernation-like鈥 state in 250-million-year-old Antarctic animal

91探花 scientists report evidence of a hibernation-like state in Lystrosaurus, an animal that lived in Antarctica during the Early Triassic, some 250 million years ago. The fossils are the oldest evidence of a hibernation-like state in a vertebrate, and indicate that torpor 鈥 a general term for hibernation and similar states in which animals temporarily lower their metabolic rate to get through a tough season 鈥 arose in vertebrates even before mammals and dinosaurs evolved.

Mount Everest summit success rates double, death rate stays the same over last 30 years

A new study led by researchers at the 91探花 and the University of California, Davis, finds that the success rate of summiting Mount Everest has doubled in the last three decades, even though the number of climbers has greatly increased, crowding the narrow route through the dangerous 鈥渄eath zone鈥 near the summit. However, the death rate for climbers has hovered unchanged at around 1% since 1990.

Social inequalities, specifically racism and classism, are impacting the biodiversity, evolutionary shifts and ecological health of plants and animals in our cities.
