Victoria Meadows, professor of astronomy at the 91探花 and director of the UW’s Virtual Planetary Laboratory, talks about how upcoming missions like the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to characterize the atmospheres of potentially Earth-like exoplanets and may even detect signs of life. At a Saturday afternoon session, researchers from the 91探花 and federal agencies will discuss the emerging research on Pacific Northwest megaquakes.
While travel bans are frequently used to stop the spread of an emerging infectious disease, a new 91探花 and Johns Hopkins University study of published research found that the effectiveness of travel bans is mostly unknown.
Using 30 years of satellite data, 91探花researchers discovered that within one year of the opening of a major dam in the Mekong River basin, downstream river temperatures during the dry season dropped by up to 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C).
Scientists and physicians have long known that immune cells migrate to the site of an infection, which individuals experience as inflammation 鈥� swelling, redness and pain. Now, researchers at the 91探花 and Northwestern University have uncovered evidence that this gathering is not just a consequence of immune activation. Immune cells count their neighbors before deciding whether or not the immune system should kick into high gear.

Four faculty members at the 91探花 have been awarded early-career fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The new Sloan Fellows, announced Feb. 12, are Kyle Armour and Jacqueline Padilla-Gami帽o, both assistant professors in the College of the Environment; and Hanna Hajishirzi and Yin Tat Lee, both assistant professors in the College of Engineering.
Satellite tracking of adult females and visual monitoring of polar bears in Baffin Bay show changes from the 1990s to the period from 2009 to 2015. Bears in Baffin Bay are getting thinner and adult females are having fewer cubs than when sea ice was more available.
The 91探花 is the host university for the 186th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, scheduled through the weekend at and around the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.

The 鈥檚 design program in the School of Art + Art History + Design earned top honors on the 2020 list of 鈥淏est Graphic Design Programs鈥� by the online site聽Animation Career Review. 91探花was the top ranked school in Washington, among the top 10 on the West Coast and ranked 7th out of 40 public institutions.
A 91探花study found that increases in minimum wages primarily had no effect on health overall. However, they did find a mix of negative and positive effects associated with the health of certain groups of working-age people.
The 91探花 ranked among the highest in the country in producing Fulbright scholars and students, according to a list published Sunday in聽The Chronicle of Higher Education. The 91探花is among 20 institutions in the country to be named a top producer for both the Fulbright U.S. Student and U.S. Scholar programs.

A new 91探花 study of eviction filings from each of Washington鈥檚 39 counties illustrates where, and to whom, evictions hit hardest.
Steve Kramer, a professor of 91探花civil and environmental engineering, has been elected to the聽National Academy of Engineering.聽Kramer is among 87 members and 18 international members newly elected to the academy, one of the highest professional distinctions in engineering.

While political debate over these efforts has long been contentious, scientific research on the health effects of raising the minimum wage is relatively new. Three students had previously also tested negative, and there are no remaining tests pending among any members of the 91探花community. There continue to be no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus among 91探花community members.

The 91探花 was notified by Public Health 鈥� Seattle & King County聽that a 91探花student from the Seattle campus is being tested for the novel coronavirus. The student traveled from China in January and lives off campus. There continue to be no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus among 91探花community members.
