Guidance on Research Involving Veterans Affairs

Update

HSD has compiled and expanded its , which includes VA Puget Sound Healthcare System (VAPSHCS). This new, easier to find guidance, was developed in consultation with individuals at VAPSHCS and the VA’s Office of Research Development.

Only one significant change has been made to HSD’s policies about VA research: 91̽»¨individuals who have an official Without Compensation (WOC) status at any VA entity are no longer also considered agents of the 91̽»¨for the purpose of the research that the WOC applies to. If the UW’s only involvement in the research is a 91̽»¨affiliated individual working under a WOC, the 91̽»¨will no longer be considered engaged in the research and dual review from both a VA IRB and the 91̽»¨IRB is not required.

Investigators planning research involving any VA entity should review the guidance and contact HSD’s Reliance Team at with any questions.
