This intermediate case-study based course provides background and context for research compliance operations at the 91̽»¨. We will present a framework and resources for research administrators who are expected to understand policies and requirements related to studies involving human subjects, research animals, and biological substances or reagents.

The cases presented assume prior knowledge of concepts related to Institutional Review Boards (IRB), Institutional Care and Use Committees (IACUC), as well as Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC) as coordinated by the Human Subjects Division, Office of Animal Welfare, and Environmental Health & Safety, respectively.

This course has been retired.  The course materials are available as a resource, but keep in mind they have not been updated. If you are looking for an introduction to export controls in research administration, we recommend you take CORE 1031, Non-Financial Compliance Basics. If you have a specific question about export controls in research, contact exports@uw.edu

RETIRED COURSE DESCRIPTION

This introductory course will cover when an export occurs and how the 91̽»¨adheres to federal export regulations while undertaking an activity or project.

The course will explore what is NOT subject to export controls such as public domain information, classroom instruction, and fundamental research as defined by the US government. The university is also required to comply with US sanctions programs, particularly those imposed on Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria. Additionally, we will look into peripheral regulations related to international research, collaboration, shipping, and travel in light of Restricted Party Screening, Anti-Boycott Regulations, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Audience

Those in the 91̽»¨research administration community involved with facilitating international research, training or services, collaborations with foreign persons, or have a high volume of shipments from the University to international locations.

This course will cover the definition of Facilities & Administrative (F&A) costs and if and when the costs that are normally treated as F&A can be directly charged to an Award. Included in this course will be information on applicable regulations, how those regulations can be interpreted by departments, how to administer these types of costs, and if such costs can be re-budgeted. The course will also include information audit guidelines and how to prepare and document these costs in the event of an audit.

You must register for this class in order to access the content. The link to the class will be included in your confirmation of enrollment email which you should receive shortly after registering.

Completion of the course quiz is required for you to receive credit on your transcript.
