This page provides guidance for HSD staff about the additional regulatory requirements for research conducted with support from any program in the Department of Justice (DOJ), including the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and Bureau of Prisons (BOP).<\/p>\n DOJ regulations apply to research that is<\/strong>:<\/p>\n DOJ defines human subjects research<\/strong> according to the original Common Rule (28 CFR 46.102(d)).<\/p>\n As required by DOJ, the IRB applies 28 CFR Part 46 to all research funded by any DOJ agency; it is the pre-2018 Common Rule.<\/strong><\/p>\n The IRB applies the DOJ research regulations and consent requirements as listed in the WORKSHEET Department of Justice<\/strong>. When the research includes prisoners, per HSD policy<\/strong>, the use of a prisoner advocate and the prisoner Criteria for Approval<\/em> are applied as described in the WORKSHEET Prisoners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n WORKSHEET Department of Justice<\/a>
