With summer and sunshine fast approaching, OYPC wants to shine the spotlight on youth sports and opportunities to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. When it comes to sports in Washington, Husky Football is the top dawg. Husky Football brings athletes and fans from all over Washington together as part of a greater community. For those aspiring to be collegiate athletes, or those who just love the game, Husky Football invites high school youth to join in their annual Football Camps. These camps help youth learn football fundamentals while enjoying the full Husky Football experience.

We had the pleasure of talking with Deborah Goldstein, Director of Football Operations, to learn more about the goals, mission and logistics behind UW鈥檚 Football Camps and how they have impacted the youth in our community. As Director of Football Operations, Deborah handles the logistics of the 91探花football team, coordinating gameday planning, travel, camps, and other special events. Deborah has been with the football department since 2010, and has been in her current role for the past seven years.

Husky Football Camps

Each year, Washington football camps bring over 250 youth into Husky Stadium to learn the game and develop their skills. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e eager and hungry to learn. I think the excitement is very obvious and everyone feels that.鈥� This summer, 91探花Football is hosting two camps for high schoolers grades 9 -12. The Specialist Camp supports youth in developing their kicking, punting, and long-snapping skills, while the Top Dawg Camp works with all other positions. With safety in mind and recognizing the increased injury risk with youth, UW鈥檚 camps are non-contact. Participants focus on running routes, practicing their 3-point stance, and exploring other fundamentals in a way that is both safe and fun. Additionally, Husky Football鈥檚 medical team is on site for both camps should any need arise. Both camps will take place on Friday, June 16th, and camps are open to any and all entrants, regardless of gender, ability, or intent of pursuing collegiate athletics.

In addition to youth camps, 91探花Football hosts coaching clinics for high school football coaches. These clinics provide the opportunity to learn coaching techniques and fundamentals from the 91探花coaching staff, preparing coaches to best support student athletes while promoting safety and a love for the game in their programs.

With hundreds of youth attending these camps, a large team is required to keep things running smoothly. The full football coaching staff, in addition to other personnel, participate in overseeing camps. 鈥淓verybody from creative, to video, the coaches, the strength staff, training, everybody鈥檚 really here to make sure everything goes well for all of our campers.鈥� On top of the 91探花football staff, players themselves help to teach football fundamentals to campers, providing a fun and unique experience. 鈥淭hey see their favorite players here coaching them and they鈥檙e learning from them. It鈥檚 a great way to give back to the community and give back to these kids who really look up to them. I think it makes us stand out and very unique.鈥�

As Deborah shares, the ultimate goal of UW鈥檚 football camps is for youth to have fun while improving their skills and learning about the game. 鈥淭he goal for our football camps is for everyone to leave feeling improvement in their craft, or 鈥業鈥檓 learning something and I want to pursue that a little bit more.鈥� So the goal is to leave feeling happy, healthy, and that they had a safe experience here on campus.鈥� Camp staff work to ensure that when youth leave Husky Stadium, they feel empowered and confident as both an athlete on the field and as an individual off the field.

Community Impact of Football at UW

While the primary focus of UW鈥檚 football camps is teaching youth the game, camps also provide a great tool for community-building. Instead of coaches recruiting on the road, football camps bring students to 91探花to directly experience the culture and excitement around Husky Football.

鈥淚n Seattle, everyone lives and breathes Husky Football. It鈥檚 made an impact that we have the camp here. It鈥檚 in our stadium. Our coaches coach it. Our players coach it. It ties everyone to the program and to the community. People love Husky Football and it shows, and I think we really do a good job of bridging that and hopefully impacting the community in a positive way.鈥� – Deborah

The connection between camp participants and the Husky Football community is strong, with some participants going on to become future Husky Football players!

By having 91探花coaches and players guide students in person, it shows that the game of football and the Husky Football community is accessible and fun for everyone, providing an empowering experience for youth. 鈥淚t鈥檚 empowering for them to leave here being like, 鈥榃ow, that guy took the time to really show me the drill, show me the proper way of doing this, and same for our coaches. It really bridges that gap of not making it seem like we鈥檙e inaccessible. We are here to help and we are here to really just have fun and play some ball.鈥� 91探花encourages all youth from different football and athletic backgrounds to participate in this once a year camp.

The different aspects of Husky Football camps, from football teachings to relationship building, provide a positive experience for youth participants, which is Deborah鈥檚 favorite part of the experience. 鈥淚 love seeing a smile on everyone鈥檚 face鈥� I鈥檓 just proud of all or our staff putting in the time to be a part of these camps and I鈥檓 proud of our campers leaving here feeling improvement in their craft. It鈥檚 a lot of work for about two-and-a-half hours of camp, but I think everyone here just leaves happy. They enjoy the whole experience.鈥�

Youth gain a lot from these football camps, but serving as camp mentors is also a rewarding experience for 91探花players and coaches. As Deborah shares, this experience instills a value of community service that stretches beyond the field. 鈥淲e take the guys to volunteer places and some of these guys even create volunteer opportunities on their own. For Thanksgiving this past year, we had a couple guys completely fundraise a community meal on their own, and a lot of our guys donated money to this cause as well. We had some guys go over to Children鈥檚 Hospital and just do all these things.鈥� It is clear that the values and impact of UW鈥檚 football camps reach far beyond the scope of the one-day camp!

OYPC Visits the 91探花Husky Stadium

OYPC members, Nick and Sydnie, got a personal tour from Deborah to see first hand the Football team facilities and the field to see where the action takes place! We were impressed by the amount of pride, care, and passion poured into the 91探花football program and for their athletes.

We learned how much 91探花football gives back to the community – it鈥檚 evident that their presence has made a great impact on more than just those in Seattle.

We saw coaches in a meeting, football players practicing on the field, trainers in the weight room, additional Football staff throughout the building – the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes was an eye opening experience we are thankful to have had the opportunity to see!

Preschool is an important experience in the lives of youth. Preschool provides an opportunity for youth to build relationships and develop social skills, and it often serves as youth鈥檚 first formal educational setting, preparing them for kindergarten and beyond. While traditional preschool programs operate inside the classroom, some programs are taking the preschool experience outdoors.

The OYPC team recently had the opportunity to speak with since 2021. is a nature-based preschool program operating in the Washington Park Arboretum. Maddie spoke with us about the history and impact of Fiddleheads, as well as goals for the school鈥檚 future. Maddie also provided us with insight on the unique considerations that arise from running a fully outdoor program, and how Fiddleheads adapts to the elements to create a safe, educational environment for youth.

What is Fiddleheads Forest School?

Fiddleheads is a school for families looking for something different from the typical preschool experience. Founded nearly a decade ago, Fiddleheads began as a single-classroom preschool program. Over time, Fiddleheads has expanded to include three classrooms and a variety of educational experiences, including morning- and full-day preschool, afternoon enrichment classes, and summer school programs. When we say 鈥渃lassrooms,鈥� we aren鈥檛 talking about the typical learning environment one would imagine. Fiddleheads classrooms are designated areas centered within the beauty of the Arboretum, providing students with a truly unique learning environment. 鈥淭he children are here anywhere from four to six hours. They are fully geared up for all kinds of weather and all kinds of adventures,鈥� said Maddie. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always really amazing to see the journey these kids go through.鈥�

Aside from a few human-made necessities like bathrooms and books, Fiddleheads classrooms are entirely nature-based. Instead of chairs, there are tree stumps for students and instructors to sit on. In place of playground equipment, you鈥檒l find log structures for students to play. As part of their classes, students explore their outdoor environment, examining bugs, birds, and plants while creating nature journals. Fiddleheads鈥� unique learning activities foster an appreciation of nature and a sense of stewardship within the students.

Impact: Fostering Healthy Development & Strong Communities

Fiddleheads helps its students develop several important skills as part of the learning experience. 鈥淭he biggest things that we work on, and our biggest hopes and goals for them, are to develop a strong sense of independence and self-reliance and self-regulation,鈥� Maddie shared, 鈥渨orking on independence with everything from zippers and lunch box containers to the bigger social pieces, recognizing their own emotions and feelings, recognizing ways that they can express those in a way that鈥檚 safe.鈥� With these goals in mind, Fiddleheads is able to support youth in developing their sense of agency. As a preschool program, Fiddleheads also works to prepare students for kindergarten and beyond. Students spend time learning words, numbers, and more while also practicing classroom skills, such as circling up for group activities or raising hands to take turns speaking.

As mentioned earlier, a unique learning aspect of Fiddleheads is the sense of stewardship it fosters within its students. As a nature-based program, stewardship and the importance of caring for the space around us is centered in Fiddleheads classes.

We work very hard with them on a very strong sense of stewardship. We want them to really understand that this is a very special space and we work really hard to take care of it. So it鈥檚 our classroom for a few hours a day, but it鈥檚 the home of the animals and the plants.

Fiddleheads leads a variety of activities to build this stewardship within students, such as watering plants or building homes for worms in the park. The combination of stewardship practices with traditional preschool activities provides an enriching educational experience for Fiddleheads students.

On top of providing an excellent educational experience for youth, Fiddleheads serves as a great support for parents and families. As a licensed program with the Department of Children Youth and Families, Fiddleheads provides a method of childcare for parents with work or other commitments; this is a big boost for families that may not have access to other forms of childcare. 鈥淣ow that we are licensed through the state, we are able to have them onsight longer, so we鈥檙e able to provide up to six and a half hours of childcare for families. So for working families or single-parent households, that is a huge difference.鈥�

Fiddleheads also supports families by providing outdoor gear for students, including warm layers to bundle up and rainproof outerwear for being in the elements. While the gear is available to all families, Maddie spoke about the importance of prioritizing families in financial need, eliminating cost barriers and promoting equitable access to Fiddleheads. 鈥淲e prioritize our financial need families鈥� It helps them try things out before they invest, or it can help financial need families who wouldn鈥檛 be able to afford all of this new, but they can borrow it free of charge from us.鈥�

Providing accessible outdoor gear ties into a major goal of Fiddleheads – creating an equitable environment for all. Fiddleheads strives to create a space that is accessible to all youth and families, a space that is inclusive and allows youth with different experiences and backgrounds to learn from each other. 鈥淲e have a strong social justice and equity component, and we really believe very strongly that nature is accessible for everyone and we work really hard to ensure that,鈥� said Maddie. To expand access to Fiddleheads, Maddie encourages all families to apply, even if they are not able to commit to full-day preschool. 鈥淲e want our community to expand as much as possible, so even if folks are only able to come to summer camp, or only do afternoon enrichment, we really want them to feel connected to the Fiddleheads community.鈥�

Fiddleheads鈥� support of youth and families and the positive impacts of their equity lens have led to the development of a strong alumni community, with many students staying connected with the Arboretum beyond their time with Fiddleheads. 鈥淸The Arboretum] is accessible to families on the afternoons, on the weekends, years later, and so the kids end up coming back with their families where they then are the guides because they know the space better than their families do. So it鈥檚 just this wonderful sense of ownership and agency for the children that can filter out to the family鈥檚 experience as well.鈥� As a major alumni milestone, the very first class of Fiddleheads students is turning 14, making them eligible to become program volunteers. With one former student lined up to start volunteering soon, Fiddleheads hopes this can grow into a continued alumni volunteering program.

Adapting to the Elements

Compared to traditional school settings, Fiddleheads has unique challenges to consider as a fully outdoor program. The main area of focus is weather-related challenges. In Maddie鈥檚 time at Fiddleheads, there have been a handful of times where school had to close for the day due to lightning or snow and ice. Recently, increases in the amount of high-wind and smoke days have presented new concerns for Fiddleheads. Fiddleheads does not have an indoor space to move to when winds suddenly pick up, or when the air quality drops past a healthy threshold, and having to close on these days can be difficult for families relying on Fiddleheads for childcare. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard for families and we completely acknowledge that. We did extend our school year a little bit this year to try and make up for that. But that is a piece that is in progress.鈥� To address weather-related closures, Maddie hopes to secure some mobile classrooms that can be in place as a backup option on bad weather days, allowing kids to stay in school and parents to maintain their childcare.

In addition to weather considerations, there are several measures in place to ensure students are safe in their outdoor learning environment. 鈥淲e definitely have a lot of sources from the 91探花,鈥� said Maddie. 鈥淥ur horticulture crew comes through and they do check-ins on our site, making sure that the trees look safe, limbs look safe, things like that.鈥� Because we鈥檙e all 91探花 employees, we still do the safe interactions with youth training and the blood borne pathogens training and things like that.鈥� Maddie also talked about working with the University鈥檚 disability services team to ensure all students and teachers have equitable access to Fiddleheads classes. The strong connections with various University resources allows Fiddleheads to maintain a safe environment for youth and teachers alike.

Continuing to Grow – Hopes for the Future

Fiddleheads has built a strong foundation of supporting families and youth rooted in equity, creating excellent educational experiences and strong communities. Even with all that has been done, there is still room for growth, especially as Fiddleheads continues moving out of COVID conditions. 鈥淲e have a strong alumni community. Unfortunately with the pandemic, some alumni events were paused for a couple of years, so we鈥檝e been trying to bring that back.鈥� Maddie already has some plans in the works for bringing back community events, including family picnics, ivy pulls, and Earth Day events. To further strengthen community ties, Maddie would also like to implement mixed-class events. 鈥淚 think [it] will be fun for the kids to shake things up a little bit, because they鈥檝e been with just their class the whole year. But it鈥檚 also a really nice opportunity for our teachers, who also are only teaching with their teaching partner, to be able to sort of mix up a little bit more and just have a little bit more of an all-school feel.鈥�

Expanding the Fiddleheads community beyond students and families, Maddie would like to see new partnerships with local organizations to provide additional services. One area for partnership is with play therapy and occupational therapy groups who are already doing supportive work with children. With Fiddleheads not having its own mental health clinicians, this partnership would make it easier to ensure all students鈥� developmental needs are assessed and met. 鈥淲e do see children who, at this age, it鈥檚 hard to tell what is just sort of where a child is developmentally or what they鈥檙e used to, versus perhaps underlying neurodiversity or special needs that hasn鈥檛 been identified yet,鈥� said Maddie. 鈥淚 think being a small school, we are kind of in the process of reaching out to a lot more organizations for support on that, people who could come in to consult and programs that we already have in place for these kids.鈥�

Other partnership goals are with organizations serving underprivileged families around Seattle. Fiddleheads currently sees most of its enrollment come from families near the Washington Park Arboretum, but Maddie wants to ensure that all families feel welcome to participate. 鈥淲e鈥檙e really looking to expand that and to try to take down any barriers that are making it hard for families all over the area and all over the demographics to apply to us.鈥� Moving forward, we can expect to see new partnerships that will further push Fiddleheads鈥� values of equity and social justice.

A Love for Nature

At the end of our conversation, Maddie spoke with us about how she got into this work and what makes nature-based preschool special. 鈥淚 really fell in love with this particular age group,鈥� she shared. 鈥淚 really feel pretty strongly about all of the science behind how formative the early years are and how important it is to have very hands-on activities for children and very outdoor activities for children.鈥� With Fiddleheads in particular, Maddie expressed the joy of working in a small school environment and getting to know and connect with each kid and parent, something that is missing from larger schools.

Maddie left us with a shoutout to the Pacific Northwest鈥檚 beautiful nature and the opportunities that come with it. 鈥淚 love Fiddleheads and I鈥檓 very committed to being here,鈥� she said. 鈥淪eattle and the Pacific Northwest in general have an abundance of nature-based preschools. A lot of them take different forms and different locations, but this is why I moved to the area, so I strongly encourage people to look into all of the different varieties of nature preschool out there!鈥�

OYPC Visits Fiddleheads!

OYPC members, Nick and Sydnie, had the opportunity to tour the Fiddleheads classrooms with Maddie first hand! Unsure about how weather conditions would play out, we were able to continue our tour during the afternoon session despite the morning session being canceled due to a wind advisory.

This day was a great example to learn how Fiddleheads managed unexpected and unsafe weather conditions in a childcare setting in real time. Although the morning sessions were canceled, by monitoring weather conditions and staying up to date with University alerts, the afternoon session continued as the blue skies began to peak through the clouds.

We were able to observe story time with the staff and children, watched as they sang their 鈥済ood-bye song鈥� and how they interacted with nature and among each other. Although the area was still damp and cold from the morning rain, the students were bundled up and still enjoyed rolling around where they could! It was refreshing to see kids be kids in the beautiful natural classroom setting and it was obvious that a little wetness and rain never hurt anybody!

Overall, we were so grateful for the opportunity to meet with Maddie in person to check out this amazing youth program. It was nothing like what we had imagined – Fiddleheads Forest School is truly a unique experience for youth to be curious, be themselves, and learn the importance of kindness towards one another and Mother Nature.

Sharing the beauty of the PNW – where experiential education comes to life with Mount Rainier Institute

is an outdoor school program created by the 91探花 in partnership with Mount Rainier National Park that provides schools in Washington an in-depth educational experience. More than just a camp, MRI provides schools with overnight, multi-day programs focusing on STEM education at their residential learning center located in Pack Forest, WA.

MRI鈥檚 mission is to provide outstanding nature-based education experiences rooted in science and nurture for the next generation of learners and leaders.

The OYPC team had the pleasure of speaking with John Hayes, the Environmental Education Program Manager, to learn more about the history, impact, and accomplishments of MRI.

Building MRI and the Team

was hired in 2012 as the Environmental Education Program Manager and has over 30 years of experience in overnight environmental education programs. Prior to coming to MRI, John has had 20 years leading and being a part of experiential education programs with National Parks, some include: the Teton Science School at Grand Teton National Park and the Director of Dunes Learning Center at Indiana Dunes National Park.

In 2012, John was hired by the 91探花School of Environment and Forest Science to start MRI in partnership with Mount Rainier National Park. John, alongside , brought this program from idea to reality in 2012. In coordination with schools, tribal entities, creating curriculum, and more – John was able to launch a pilot program in the fall of 2013 before officially opening the school programs fall of 2014.

As the director of the Mount Rainier Institute – John is responsible for many different aspects of the program, saying, 鈥淚 do a little bit of everything.鈥� His responsibilities include, curriculum development, program creation, recruiting, marketing, coordination, fundraising, and so much more. Although John does a lot to help this program, he primarily sees his role as someone who is putting the right people in the room together.

Along with John, who create the curriculum and teach students during their stay at MRI. There鈥檚 a misconception that MRI is a summer camp for students and staff are considered camp counselors – the staff at MRI are highly trained, educated, and talented teachers who strongly believe in experiential education.

In addition to the educators, the Pack Forest Conference Center includes kitchen, maintenance and custodial staff who help keep the housing facilities clean and safe for their students and Additional important staff include the Forest Operations Specialist, Chase Beyer, who oversees forest maintenance as well as Pack Forest timber work and Dr. Greg Ettl.

Annually, MRI gets approximately 1,200 – 1,600 students, parents, and chaperones who participate in their overnight programming. Each overnight program has about 30 hours of instructional time which is similar to the amount of instructional time in a week of school.

MRI has a fall and spring season in which they operate their overnight programs. The fall season starts in early September and goes until Thanksgiving while the spring season goes from late March to mid June. Surprisingly, MRI is not very active in the summer season because it is a time for other University related operations to continue such as forestry internships.

The powerful impact of MRI

There are four big picture goals that MRI has for their programming which is rooted in their educational programming – the acronym of these goals also describes what MRI is: E.P.I.C.

The first goal is Education – The difference between teaching students science in a classroom versus teaching at MRI is that students get to engage in science in an authentic and real way which they might not be able to when they are at school.

鈥淭here鈥檚 an academic nature to what we do as the 91探花. We are the School of Environment Forest and Science, we offer education in a very real and authentic way. We really try to make sure there is an experiential nature to what we do and that students are learning science by doing science outdoors in our forests and Mt. Rainier National Park – this is not a camp, students are in classes and doing real field work when they are out here.鈥� – John

The second big picture goal is Place – MRI hopes to connect students to this place, which is the Mount Rainier region and Washington state. MRI wants students to recognize and appreciate the extraordinary and beautiful state we live in and are so lucky to call home. The goal of MRI is to have students develop a connection to the place, making them want to stay here and foster a desire to act responsibly and take care of the environment around them – wherever they may live within Washington.

The third big picture goal is to Inspire students in some way. One of the aspects of going to an outdoor school and being able to disconnect from your normal life is the opportunity to expand your comfort zone. At MRI, students have the opportunity to have a life-changing experience and inspiration is critical. So how does MRI inspire students?

鈥淲e don鈥檛 really know sometimes – some are inspired by science鈥any students have never done science like this and have never seen themselves as a scientist鈥nother way might be that students will go up to Mt. Rainier and have this extraordinary experience where they are blown away by the beauty that is up there鈥ome students are inspired by the relationships they develop with fellow classmates and teachers.鈥� – John

The fourth big picture is Community. With the nature of how MRI programs are designed, being in close proximity with classmates, teachers, and chaperones for multiple days allows for the development of community in a different way than is possible in the classroom or at home. MRI sees community building as an essential part to solving environmental issues in society. John shares that 鈥渨e have to learn to like each other, get along, and understand one another鈥� in order to make a difference within our environment. As we emerge from the pandemic, it鈥檚 important to acknowledge that students may feel more desocialized and isolated as a result of being away from each other. MRI works to foster community and relationships among students and provide a safe and welcoming environment for students to reconnect.

The importance of experiential outdoor education

As the Director of MRI – there is always something to learn from your team and those you serve. We asked John about what he has learned from youth since beginning his time as the Director that allowed him to continue strengthening the program鈥檚 accessibility so that students of all economic backgrounds can experience MRI.

MRI continues to learn how to outreach more effectively so that the program can reach broader audiences including marginalized groups who have not had the opportunity to explore outdoor education. MRI’s ultimate goal is to make outdoor education a universal experience for everyone to enjoy and take away one or all of the E.P.I.C. components MRI strives to provide. John shares that in the last 10 years, MRI has been making strides in changing the way the program teaches. There is a new generation of staff and MRI educators who are coming in with better skills to reach more diverse groups of students.

MRI works with students from many different ages, types of schools, different regions, and backgrounds. John explains that 鈥渢here may be a private high school group from an AP Environmental Science class from the suburbs one day, and young students from a completely different region in rural Washington the next.鈥� MRI staff are trained and skilled with the tools to support the diverse audiences who come to MRI to experience the same magic of the PNW. MRI educators understand the different needs and goals of each student coming into the program, allowing them to strengthen the development of the E.P.I.C. goals. MRI allows each group of students who come in to discover and participate in their program at their own level, only pairing schools with one another if they are compatible – this could mean schools with similar philosophies, structures, or ages of youth.

鈥淲e never want to make students feel uncomfortable for any reason – students are already pushing their comfort zones by being away from home.鈥� – John

John shares that his favorite thing about his role is getting to see students enjoy the experiences of the programs and being inspired by what they see and do at MRI. He describes the excitement students have when they get to see something they have only ever seen in their textbooks and how rewarding it is to share those moments with them.
It鈥檚 clear how passionate and driven John is about having students in Washington have access and opportunity to experience the outdoors like never before.

Overcoming challenges and looking at the future

COVID has been a great challenge that many youth programs have had to endure. John explains how devastating COVID had been to the program and other environmental education centers due to the sudden lack of students, budget, and the negative impact it had on the mental and physical health of youth. The MRI community learned how to advocate for themselves as programming began to open up again, explaining that 鈥渢he last year felt like starting over again.鈥�
John also worked with the Washington Outdoor Schools Coalition which helped pass House Bill 2078 establishing the Outdoor Schools For All program. Like it sounds, the bill bolsters outdoor education experiences and aims to ensure that all students in Washington have the opportunity to attend an overnight outdoor school program. HB2078 does this by establishing grant programs that help schools and outdoor education providers remove barriers to participation, like cost.
COVID made people recognize that students are missing out on critical experiences when they are not able to go outside; this is reflected through lower testing outcomes, such as math and reading scores, and socialization challenges. Research backing the importance of outdoor programs was a big factor for the legislature to support funding outdoor schools like MRI. In March 2022 House Bill 2078 was passed which increased the funding to help more schools participate in outdoor school programs throughout the state such as MRI.

鈥淭hese programs are really important for students. If we give up on them, or say they鈥檙e too expensive, and we stop offering them, we are losing something really important. If we think of these as summer camp experiences that don鈥檛 have educational and relationship value, we are missing the point.鈥� – John

Looking ahead, MRI continues to only grow stronger each year as staff become more capable in understanding the importance of outdoor education for youth. John is most excited about the potential of HB 2078, allowing for the expansion of access to the opportunities that MRI offers. Additionally, Washington state would be a leader for this type of outdoor programming. Some other future goals include getting a suite of winter dates put together, allowing for more schools to engage in MRI programming, and helping schools develop their own programming or finding other existing programming that fits their needs if MRI cannot.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: The Impact of Partnerships and Student Employees

This year, Washington Sea Grant and DO-IT partnered – both groups are DO-IT students and WA Sea Grant provided content for the DO-IT Scholars program. DO-IT鈥檚 NNL provides hands-on experiences in neuroscience disciplines, networking opportunities and resources to high school and early postsecondary students identified as 鈥渘eurodiverse鈥� learners.

Maile Sullivan (she/her) – WA Sea Grant, Education Coordinator. Maile鈥檚 goal is translating science and research about ocean & coastal systems to a broader audience, with hope it can be used by the community. Maile focuses on K-12 outreach, including NOAA Science Camp and Orca Bowl. Both programs have been on hiatus due to COVID, which has opened up creative new opportunities like this partnership. Fun fact, Maile started as a student assistant (鈥渁n Anita鈥�) in 2006!
Tami Tidwell (she/her) – DO-IT, Program Director. Tami wears many hats: she directs the DO-IT Scholars program (a year-round, multi-year program with a summer session) and the Neuroscience for Neurodiverse Learners program (primarily a summer, multi-year program with some school-year elements). This is Tami鈥檚 20th year at UW!
Anita Wray (she/her) – Education Student Assistant at WA Sea Grant. Anita is currently completing her Masters in Aquatic & Fisheries Sciences and facilitated most of the NOAA/DO-IT summer program 2021 and 2022. She is 鈥淢aile鈥檚 right (and left!) hand woman.鈥�
Piper Hawley (they/them) – Program Assistant at DO-IT. Piper is a sophomore at Western Washington University, focusing on neuroscience with an intention to one day pursue a PhD. They work on multiple projects with Tami. Piper was an NNL participant in 2020, before becoming a peer leader in 2021 and finally staff in 2022.

The unique partnership between DO-IT NNL and Washington Sea Grant has allowed for both programs to reveal both the great benefits and challenges of integrating the two programs for their students.

DO-IT is a cohorted program with around 17-20 Scholars each year joining the DO-IT Scholars Program. Students are invited to return annually until they leave for college and are then invited to come back as mentors and/or leaders for the new cohorts. Around 65 DO-IT Scholars (Scholars and mentors) and 30 NNL students participated in the summer of 2022.

As for WA Sea grant, NOAA Science Camp had been seeing about 120 students per summer participating in their 2 week program. Since 2020 and , NOAA鈥檚 attendees has skyrocketed to over 600 participants who join through webinars. Their new hybrid model allows for more students not from the immediate area to participate and not be as geographically dependent with their programming. Another strategy, as see, is to branch out and partner with other programs!

From Friendship to Partnership

How did this partnership come to be?

鈥淚t was the perfect storm of COVID that created a gap that allowed for this partnership to happen鈥� we gained some amazing experiences from it, as well as the youth who hopefully benefitted from the programs partnering.鈥� – Anita

Tami and Maile partnered because of their existing friendship from the Summer Programs Planning (SPP) meetings hosted by OYPC and participation on the Summer Programs Planning steering committee. During the SPP meetings, Tami and Maile had a very general idea of what one another did in their positions, but hadn鈥檛 explored what kind of partnership could be possible.

Tami and Maile highlighted the long process of 鈥渞ecreating鈥� their programs and the process of bringing in new ideas while reworking old models because of the pandemic. After summer 2021 programming, it became clear that reaching out to peer programs would help bring new perspective and structure to the future of youth programming.

DO-IT knew they had to pivot to online work – one of their partners (Rooted in Rights) was ready to go virtual while other partners were bowing out. During the brainstorming process of programming, Maile and Tami completed one another with Maile saying 鈥淚 need to do programming鈥� (鈥淚 have the scientists!鈥�) and Tami saying 鈥淚 need to plug in programming鈥� (鈥淚 need the scientists!鈥�).

The opportunity to work with one another was special and new for both the students and staff. Maile and Tami have learned from each other鈥檚 programs and have learned how to look at their own programs with a different perspective while incorporating new ideas that might have never been possible before without this partnership.

鈥淭here’s never going to be a moment where you have 20 students of different disabilities, so that opportunity is a unique one – and being able to spend as much time – as Maile got to spend time with the students – is so unique. It allows you to learn and change and evolve in a way that is hard to do theoretically, but it does change your program forever.鈥� – Tami

WA Sea Grant and DO-IT have shared their expertise to help grow and better their programs so students can feel welcomed and comfortable.

The Future of Partnerships for the Youth at 91探花Community

What鈥檚 next for these two programs? With the success of this partnership, we wonder if this will evolve into something more, or will it continue in the same format as this year.

鈥淚f you would have asked us 3 years ago that we were going to be doing 3 summers online, we would think you were out of your mind, so we just don鈥檛 know what next year is going to look like. We will hopefully continue working together in the same similar format, but if it is not, I hope that we will continue to offer programming from WA Sea Grant and I know that will stay the same, in one shape or form.鈥� – Tami

WA Sea Grant and DO-IT have adapted for 3 years to make sure their students are receiving the best programming and access to resources to make for an engaging and exciting summer. Without knowing what the future holds, programming has been difficult to predict, but with diligent planning and experience in adapting to the unknown, the possibilities to create something new to strengthen programming year after year remains achievable.

鈥淲e will be keeping an eye out for opportunities that are presented to us knowing that we have some capacity to partner at this level of programming and we just have to make it work for whatever scenario we are in鈥�the spirit to continue to work together is there for sure. We would love to continue to partner [with DO-IT] and what that looks like is a big question mark with what the future holds.鈥� – Maile

Tami replies to this sentiment about the hopes of continuing this thriving partnership, saying, 鈥淲e will hopefully continue working together in the same similar format, but if its not, I hope that we will continue to offer programming from WA Sea Grant and I know that will stay the same, in one shape or form.鈥�

Collaborating with Fellow Programs

WA Sea Grant and DO-IT are great examples and inspiration for us in the Youth at 91探花Network to to use one another as a resource and to collaborate as a team to accomplish new visions and goals. We wonder how OYPC and program directors can encourage one another to think creatively and create these opportunities for themselves. Maile explained that right now funders seem to be more open to different 鈥渄eliverables鈥� and that 鈥渁s long as you鈥檙e serving relatively the same audience (serving youth and having aligned missions)鈥o for it!鈥�

These partnerships are born when that 鈥渘udge鈥� and the question of 鈥渨hat could be done and created鈥� comes along. Incentives are big and finding the right connecting points to match with another program can help with creating a foundation to a partnership. Some incentives include a shared target audience, shared content goals (STEM, Sports, etc.), shared programming venue or location and even shared transportation needs.

During the OYPC SPP meetings – directors see the amazing programs other directors run, but it鈥檚 hard to see how you, specifically, may fit into that. When we, as a community, allow for conversation, friendship and curiosity to form among our network, we begin to dream together about the possible programming that our youth can experience.

鈥淚f nothing else, what we would like to take from this experience is sort of the lessons that we have learned around developing and operating programming to a very diverse audience of learners – how can we implement that in our own programming? Certainly when we are back in the field of NOAA science camp I know at a minimum that I have Tami and DO-IT as a resource to figure out what we need to do to shift our programming so that it can be more accessible in addition to hopefully continuing partnering in programming.鈥� – Maile

Collaborating with Students

We have focused on how programs can collaborate amongst each other to build new programming and strengthen their current ones. OYPC experienced, first hand, the impact of Anita and Piper, as student employees, on their programs.

How can programs utilize student employees, interns, and student volunteers to help evolve the mentorship and peer model aspect that allows many of these youth programs to thrive?

Piper鈥檚 and Anita鈥檚 enthusiasm for youth programming shines through their teaching model and interactions with students. It is obvious that these two are dedicated to educating the youth and helping the future generations learn and grow within the subjects they are, too, so passionate about. Not only do Piper and Anita support programming and teaching behind the scenes, but they also lead activities and exercises during the session making students feel more comfortable engaging with the class. By being both peers and facilitators, Piper and Anita help move conversation and discussion along by monitoring the chat box, reacting vocally or through Zoom icons, and always giving the appropriate time and space for students to react with their own thoughts.

Anita and Piper have had a great impact on the students and the program directors. Both students heavily support Maile and Tami, bringing in their strengths and expertise to continuously help improve and evolve what is already being done. With their different perspectives, it鈥檚 allowed for the two programs to even have this partnership to begin with! For example, Anita鈥檚 background and previous experience working in camps allowed Tami and Maile to move forward with developing new programming with confidence.

鈥淢y favorite part is when you鈥檙e developing a lesson and you finally see the excitement and you see it click with the students – it鈥檚 harder in a virtual space to get that – but when on the day OYPC came and observed, you see students mouths drop and faces come closer to the screen, those tiny little moments were so exciting because it showed that students were staying engaged and, on the teacher鈥檚 end, a check that we did it! We created something that was engaging, students were involved and they were excited about it!鈥� – Anita

As the program assistant for DO-IT NNL, and also being a former program participant, Piper is able to relate and model to students during their sessions. Piper is currently working on a writing piece that highlights how folks are able to phrase questions in sessions and interact with people with disabilities – a testament to the impact of bringing students to the staffing team. Program leadership and staff learn from student employees just as much as they learn from them!

鈥淚鈥檝e learned a lot from the students and getting to build that connection is really rewarding鈥ne thing I鈥檝e found great about online programming is that we can do a lot of the behind the scenes work quietly and not as intrusive to the students – in person, you have to try really hard to make it seem like you aren鈥檛 working in a million directions all at once because you want the students to have a good time. Working with my team, everyone can seamlessly hop in and change roles. We connect well together and the DO-IT staff allows us to be flexible, it鈥檚 one of my favorite things about my job鈥� – Piper

Learning from the Students

Youth programming is all about the students. The hard work that program directors and program staff members put into their sessions is to make sure their youth are receiving the education and fun they deserve over the summer.

While it may seem more obvious that youth are the ones learning from us during these sessions, we realize that we can learn greatly from our youth as well.

Tami shares with us what she has learned from youth through DO-IT scholars, saying, 鈥淭hey may be youth, but they are future adults. They have so much potential and something to contribute鈥� It鈥檚 easy to make assumptions [during virtual sessions] – like that a camera off means someone isn鈥檛 engaged – but 9/10 times that鈥檚 not true. Everyone鈥檚 a human. If we give people the benefit of the doubt, they tend to live up to that.鈥�

Maile鈥檚 job as a hands-on science educator has had many challenges since adjusting due to COVID. Since recreating NOAA Science Camp, she鈥檚 had to learn what engagement looks like within her sessions and how to adapt to the new circumstances. This was a really good lesson for engaging with the public at WA Sea Grant, 鈥測ou never know how they learn, where they鈥檙e coming from鈥� but teaching is often really prescribed. Re-learning what engagement can look like when you connect in a new and different way.鈥�

Whether we are on the beach learning about the rocky intertidal zone over Zoom, or in a Zoom call learning about how to prepare for college – how we choose to engage with each other does not have to interfere with what we are learning.

The teams behind WA Sea Grant and DO-IT have shown us the possibilities that can come out of persevering to push the boundaries of youth programming. By partnering together to provide new and meaningful content for students, the two programs are carving out a new path for programs to find opportunities to pursue together.

Students for the Day: OYPC Experiences Summer Sessions with DO-IT and Washington Sea Grant Partnership

So, what is it actually like to participate in a summer youth program?

OYPC got to join in on two virtual sessions this summer: one by for DO-IT Scholars and one session with DO-IT Neuroscience for Neurodiverse Learners to learn first hand what it鈥檚 like to be a student participating in youth programming! Because DO-IT and WA Sea Grant are in partnership this year, both groups are DO-IT students and WA Sea Grant provided content for the DO-IT Scholars program.

In our session with WA Sea Grant, we got a tour of the rocky intertidal zone on the north end of Vashon Island with marine ecologist .

As we all began to shuffle into the Zoom room, we were warmly greeted by the entire Washington Sea Grant team, Maile, Anita, and Lisa, as well as Alexis and Angela who are DO-IT Ambassadors.

Anita kicked off the exciting tour session by sharing the community contract and highlighting the agreements and expectations students created for one another. Community agreements allow students and staff to hold one another accountable to maintain a respectful, safe and comfortable class environment for everyone.

After the community contract recap, we got right into preparing to go on our virtual tour of Vashon Island鈥檚 coastline! Students were given links to rocky intertidal notes and a beach guide to prepare us for what we will be talking about and seeing during our tour.

Jeff joined us on the Zoom call right from the beach. Jeff鈥檚 personable approach in showing students the wildlife while also educating us through conversation made this tour engaging, interactive and most importantly, fun!

We got to see so many different organisms that many of us may not see or know about when visiting the same beaches ourselves. We got to see moon snails, sea stars, ship worms and so much more – all in real time with Jeff, and all via his phone!

Lisa, Maile and Anita acted as the facilitators for the sessions, prompting participation from the students, sharing resources and relaying questions to Jeff.

The session wrapped up with a recap allowing us to circle back to group conversations to share what we learned. We jotted down what we learned in a shared document and got to read what our peers learned as well. This served as a great way to capture information and check for comprehension with students, as well as providing an easy way to engage in an online environment.

DO-IT Neuroscience for Neurodiverse Learners (NNL)

Our second sample session began with a fun question – 鈥淲hat are you drinking?鈥� – to get our brains awake and ready to learn. In this session, Bree Callahan, the UW鈥檚 ADA Coordinator, spoke about accessibility and accommodations in college.

After introductions from Bree, we got into announcements and were reminded of our group norms, the chat function and Zoom icons. (We especially loved the use of emoji in the Zoom chat!) The purpose of this session was to help students feel confident about leaving high school and navigating the resources available in higher education to support them in their education. To allow Bree and the DO-IT staff to know us better, we were given interactive polls to answer anonymously.

We had a very honest conversation with Bree about the reality of college as someone who is neurodivergent. We learned that college is about independence, meaning that we have to take the lead in seeking and accepting support in our chosen institutions. It was emphasized that college is a privilege and that we are choosing to continue our education beyond what is required. Because college is not guaranteed, schools are more focused on providing equal access, but not necessarily equal success. For students with access needs, this can be a challenging switch from the K-12 environment.

Fortunately, programs like DO-IT exist to give students a taste of college-like environments that many students will experience in the future. For example, DO-IT hosts sessions in different campus spaces such as auditoriums and labs, exposing students to the campus environment and the experience of moving between locations on campus.

An important lesson learned was understanding that accommodations in college are not presented to students like a menu; accommodations are individualized based on your course of study and specific needs.

We finished the session with time to ask questions and a checklist on things to do to prepare for college and things to think about for those who might still be in the application process. With this session, students feel more confident and prepared to begin their new journeys!

Empowering the Business Leaders of our Future – Young Executives of Color

The mission of is to cultivate the academic and professional potential of underrepresented high school student leaders in Washington State through college preparation, powerful mentorship, and the development of real life business skills.听

YEOC is a free nine-month college pipeline program hosted by the 91探花 Foster School of Business. YEOC hosts one Saturday session each month from 8 A.M. – 5 P.M. YEOC is committed to increasing access among historically underrepresented groups, including African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian students. To reach these populations, YEOC focuses most of their outreach and recruitment in Tacoma, South Seattle and Eastern Washington high schools.听

The OYPC had the pleasure of interviewing Damariz, Vanessa and a current YEOC mentee about their experiences, goals and outlook within YEOC.听

The Start – How did YEOC begin?

Years ago, saw the need for programming tailored to the recruitment, admission and retention of students of color in Foster School of Business. In 2006, Elliott launched the first YEOC program with 36 students.听

Today, Damariz continues Elliott鈥檚 legacy of exposing diverse and talented students (up to 180 a year now!) to the world of business and the opportunities available to them at the Foster School or other higher education institutions.

As the program manager, Damariz oversees the entirety of the YEOC program – from recruitment, logistics and admissions to hiring mentors and planning and coordinating what each Saturday session entails. Damariz has spent the past 5 years growing and strengthening the program to where it is now, sharing that 鈥淸I] couldn鈥檛 do a lot of the work I do without all the mentors and student employees.鈥澨�

Another important member of the YEOC team is Vanessa, the business operations intern. Vanessa works closely with Damariz, mentors and volunteers to help coordinate and plan all the program sessions, manage session logistics, and oversee the volunteers. In addition, Vanessa lead YEOC’s career fair as an MiT for the 2020-2021 school year alongside the Program Management team, who offer sponsorship and support to YEOC.

The Importance of Mentorship at YEOC

YEOC is committed to always leading with intentionality, purpose and a community focus. Damariz explains that 鈥淓verything has a purpose in the Saturday session. YEOC doesn鈥檛 want to waste time with students who spend a whole Saturday once a month with us.鈥� Additionally, YEOC does not sell students a dream about one day making it. YEOC is intentionally transparent and honest about the reality of being a person of color in the business world and provides the support and resources to make sure students feel prepared when they finish high school.听

Mentors and interns play one of the most important roles at YEOC because of their ability to honestly share their experiences and lead by example. Mentors and interns prove to mentees that representation does exist and that young students of color have a college-aged peer to look up to. Mentees can look up to undergraduate students like Vanessa, who are successfully navigating college and internship experiences, and see that these corporate opportunities are just as accessible and possible to them: as Damariz says, 鈥淢entors are living breathing examples that mentees can do it too!鈥�

There are currently 17 undergraduate mentors who help lead lectures for each Saturday session. Mentors are assigned to lead sessions based on their major; for example, last month鈥檚 topic was Finance, so Finance majors took the lead in presenting. Each mentor has complete autonomy for their 45 minute presentations, but beforehand, mentors connect with Foster faculty to go over their planned lecture and receive feedback and suggestions. During these sessions, mentors speak to areas they feel would be most beneficial for a high school student to get an introduction to the business subject.听

Although mentor-led lectures are an important part of a mentee鈥檚 session, this is just one eighth of the day! Each Saturday also includes a keynote speaker from YEOC鈥檚 EY partner or alumni network, a hands-on workshop related to the session鈥檚 subject, college prep to help with financial aid or college choice, and most importantly, a personal check-in. YEOC鈥檚鈥渞eal talks鈥� at the end of each Saturday session allow mentors to check in with their mentees to get feedback about the session and to see how YEOC mentees are feeling moving forward.听

The 2021-22 cohort includes 155 students, about 8-10 students per mentor. By grouping students with an assigned mentor, it allows students to just have more intimate conversations, mentorship and community among one another in a smaller space in addition to the larger group session activities. It鈥檚 important for YEOC to make mentees know that they aren鈥檛 just a number and that each mentee鈥檚 experience is prioritized and special – YEOC goes beyond just providing resources for them.听

Mentors in YEOC go above and beyond to help their mentees feel supported every step of the way through the program. Mentors are in communication with their mentees to provide guidance and advice as mentees begin applying for internships, scholarships and colleges. Our mentee expressed that she has developed a relationship with other mentors, not just her own, broadening her community and support system at YEOC.

The Impact of YEOC and Power of Community

As these examples illustrate, YEOC recognizes the importance of building community among students – students from different backgrounds, schools and communities come together and are able to bond and understand each other when they come to YEOC. Mentees are respected and valued for their own lived experiences and perspectives, allowing YEOC to continue building an inclusive environment for all students. Additionally, YEOC makes sure to provide a space for students to provide feedback to YEOC leadership and to share their experiences so that YEOC can actually adapt the program to make sure it works for them.听

鈥�Community doesn鈥檛 work without the students. The better ideas always come from the mentees and mentors. It鈥檚 the students who create initiatives at YEOC – for example, the push for being inclusive to religious holidays, celebrating all cultures and identity, the push for using pronouns. We model for our students that it is not always a cold world in business. This is the standard that we expect in our space and we hope that when students walk into other spaces, they can create change so that their new communities are inclusive not just for themselves, but for everyone else coming in.鈥� – Damariz Ib谩帽ez

Vanessa & our YEOC mentees agree that community and the YEOC network has been the most impactful aspect of their experiences. Vanessa shares with that 鈥渁s a student from Quincy, Washington, I was able to come to YEOC and see other people of color who looked like me and had similar goals as me – it was impactful for me to see the different opportunities in business that I couldn鈥檛 get in my high school, but was most impactful was seeing my mentors of similar backgrounds and age get internships and be successful in college.鈥�

Our YEOC mentee expressed how the community has positively impacted her time over the past nine months in the program: 鈥淵EOC has been more amazing than what I have ever thought. The amount of community and mentorship that YEOC offers is absolutely incredible and I wouldn鈥檛 be where I am in terms of believing in myself and identifying my goals if it weren鈥檛 for YEOC.鈥� Additionally, she expressed how the YEOC community has allowed her to go beyond her comfort zone – she鈥檚 tried new things that she wouldn鈥檛 normally do if she didn鈥檛 have the support of her peers and mentors, something she will take away after the program ends.听

Just like their mentors, mentees are also role models for others in showing that anything is possible. Through all the adversities YEOC students face – being first generation, first to finish high school, first to learn the English language in their family – YEOC strives to recognize the hard work mentees do to support their own families through their own jobs and education and doing so with no complaints.

COVID-19 鈥� Navigating a Pandemic听

Because community is such an integral part of YEOC, returning to the 2021-22 year with in-person programming has been a great reminder to how meaningful building relationships first hand really is. Although in-person programming is preferred, YEOC learned to adapt and leverage their resources for students during virtual programming. There was a great shift in culture when YEOC transitioned virtually during the peak of the pandemic because one of the program鈥檚 biggest assets is showing up in-person to build relationships and that community on campus. Damariz explained that 鈥渋t was difficult at first to capture student engagement compared to being in-person, but now that we鈥檙e back in-person, we are seeing that eagerness and students as we begin to go back to normal.鈥澨�

While convening virtually, conversations surrounding food and housing security became a priority when checking-in with YEOC mentees. It was no longer about whether the students will show up to each session, but how they show up and making sure there are no barriers preventing them from being present.

New Opportunities & Continuing a Legacy

Moving forward, the YEOC team shared with us some new ambitions and goals to strengthen their program. In the future, YEOC hopes to have more involvement at the undergraduate level in the Foster School, allowing for more partnerships with other Foster programs. Additionally, YEOC aims to provide more formal opportunities for their alumni network to come back and mentor YEOC undergraduates when they鈥檝e finished the program.听

With positive feedback surrounding the YEOC branding, YEOC hopes to have more universities (Washington State University, Seattle University, etc.) adopt this program statewide so more students are able to participate. Although YEOC is currently at a cap, Vanessa shared that she envisions a future where they will be able to bring on more mentors, mentors in training, volunteers and most importantly, more mentees. As the program continues to grow, our mentee shared that she hopes to one day become a mentor and contribute back to the community that believed in her so much.听

Damariz expressed her sincere awe of her mentees and how hard they work to show up and use the space that YEOC has provided them and make the most of what they learned to go back to their own communities and make change. Mentees are more than change makers: they are pillars to the community.

Inspiring a New Generation of Medical Professionals with INSIGHT

A high school program created by the , the is an intensive four week high school program that introduces students to public health, biomedical research, medicine, and injury prevention. The program is open to high school students entering grades 10-12 or recently graduated and provides valuable exposure to the medical and public health fields, emphasizes social justice and highlights health disparities.听

The OYPC team had the opportunity to hear from Amy Muma, the Education and Training Specialist for HIPRC.

A Further Look Inside INSIGHT

A collaborative and creative space for students to learn more about public health, INSIGHT helps students understand core public health concepts through the lenses of research and social justice. Students take a deep dive into injury prevention research through various activities and have the chance to present a capstone project on Symposium Day at the end of the four week program. Each year, students are challenged to tackle a public health problem and present an analysis and proposed solution to the problem. Past topics include bike helmet use, first aid bleeding control, distracted driving prevention, and pedestrian safety. This summer, students will contribute to earthquake preparedness and response by building a walking plan with the fewest potential barriers, an approach known as BRISK (Best Route for Injury Support during an earthquaKe).

Through INSIGHT, students increase their exposure to health-related fields, injury and violence prevention research, and health equity. This unique opportunity allows students to get exposure to real local challenges and talk to professionals in the health field while meeting like minded students interested in the same field. The program also includes educational seminars and, in non-COVID times, field trips to locations including the Airlift NW helipad and the Harborview Emergency Department. Many students of the program have continued on to study a health-related field in college and some continue on to medical school. INSIGHT students have used their final symposium project as a major talking point to their college applications.听

As the only high school level injury and violence prevention program, it鈥檚 evident that the future is in good hands as INSIGHT has given students a chance to connect and gain a greater understanding of their community health systems, health disparities, and how they can contribute positive change in these areas.

Moving Past Hurdles

Leading an educational youth program is a rewarding experience, but it is no easy task – Amy shares with us that youth have a lot of questions, which 鈥�is the best part, students have tons of questions and they make the INSIGHT staff better teachers.鈥�听

Amy鈥檚 favorite part about INSIGHT is getting to know all the students! Although this four week program is able to provide so much for its students, Amy shares that it鈥檚 still challenging to find the time to allow for social bonding time, especially online.听

Despite COVID鈥檚 big hit on so many in-person programs, INSIGHT has been able to adapt to an online platform allowing for more students to participate. By moving to a digital platform, INSIGHT has been able to reach more students nationwide:

鈥�We turned lemons into lemonade when COVID-19 hit so many schools with stay at home measures. We are able to transition INSIGHT to an online platform and attract students not only from the state of Washington, but throughout the US, China and Europe. Our enrollment went from 15 to 100.鈥�

By going completely online, INSIGHT has been able to make the program more personalized for each student, adding a more engaged mentoring component. Each day students meet in a 鈥渉ome room鈥� with their assigned Teaching Assistant. During these daily check-ins, students are able to use this time with their TA through Zoom or Microsoft Teams to learn about the day鈥檚 agenda, answer homework Q&A and hear about upcoming social activities. Although going online has allowed for greater accessibility, Amy acknowledges that there are still challenges with maintaining online engagement.

鈥�Students are pretty used to online these days, but it takes a bit of work from the INSIGHT TAs to engage with each student. Engagement requires a bit of social interactions online. We have students from all over the US, and now they are inviting strangers to collaborate. We want to be respectful of their needs at the same time, and try to engage with them in the homeroom – polls, games and stories.鈥�

So what鈥檚 next for INSIGHT? Although adapting to being an all remote program has been rewarding in increasing their admissions, Amy explains that Zoom classrooms create a silo learning environment and 鈥�we want to change this for a more engaging experience.鈥� Amy intends to strengthen the socializing aspect of the program by adding more opportunities, such as having games and discussions in homerooms.

Hearing from the Youth of INSIGHT

INSIGHT has given students the chance to explore their curiosity and passion in the medical field. Previous INSIGHT students share their experience in the proram:

鈥�I’m a rising junior who had the opportunity to attend this year’s High School听INSIGHT program. I would just like to thank you for providing us with a chance to learn about the public health field. Over the summer, the seminars have broadened my perspective on the medical field – it has helped me understand that it is an interconnected field between different specializations and that there are many ways in which we can make an impact. Getting to work with my peers on publishing a policy brief as professional epidemiologists would has been a wonderful chance to understand the work of a professional.鈥�

INSIGHT provides a network where students can connect with researchers and medical professions to follow-up with more opportunities to explore, even after the program ends. INSIGHT builds community by fostering relationships between professionals and students and is committed to supporting past and present students succeed in their own endeavors. One student shares about the opportunity of getting to work alongside (Dr. Curatolo), Michele Curatolo, MD, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, 91探花 research pain management after being connected through Dr. Curatolo, a seminar speaker of the program.听

鈥�I also just wanted to express a sincere thank you because I never would have had this opportunity if it weren’t for INSIGHT, and I’m really grateful and excited about it! I thought it might be a long shot contacting Dr. Curatolo because he lives across the country鈥’ll be able to work with Dr. Colloca and another lab member on a research project this summer/fall! I’m very excited and very grateful.鈥�

INSIGHT has been in operation since 2017 and typically runs during June – July. This year, the program will be online from June 27 – July 22 from 9 am to 2 pm. Applications will be open for the program March 1-June 3, 2022. Enrollment is rolling until the program is filled. This year, INSIGHT is accepting 93 students into the program and has select scholarship opportunities as well.听

Making Noise with RadioActive

Brought to us by , Seattle’s NPR news station, is a youth program created to inspire and educate young people on the importance and impact of radio journalism. The OYPC team had the honor to interview a staff member, a mentor and program participant of RadioActive to share their insights and experiences on what building and growing RadioActive meant to them.

鈥淩adioActive Youth Media is where young people discover public radio journalism and gain access to the skills, community and institutional resources that spur their growth as media makers. Through their stories, listeners of all ages gain a deeper understanding of young people whose voices are rarely heard by the greater public.鈥澨� ()

The Start – How did RadioActive begin and what has it become?听

RadioActive began in 2004 when high school students asked to have a voice at the radio station. Since being permanently established in 2013, the program has served over 6,000 youth and has evolved into the vibrant, fast-paced and competitive radio journalism program it is today. RadioActive has two full-time staff members (and are currently ), and they have about 20 part-time youth and adult staff members. Kyle describes the program as an 鈥淣PR boot camp for teenagers,鈥� and breaks down 鈥渢he three big buckets鈥� of RadioActive activities:

Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop – a paid multi-week summer intensive program for 12-20 youth to get exposure to what radio journalism is all about. Projects include making podcasts and radio stories.
Advanced Producer’s Program – a year-round program that offers leadership development, radio production and employment opportunities to 20-30 Intro Workshop alumni yearly. This program offers another intensive multi-month radio production workshop, a speakers series, pop-up opportunities, internships with KUOW shows, and co-reporting projects with KUOW reporters.
Community Workshops – workshops that prioritize partnerships with youth who are incarcerated, migrant workers, refugees and others without ready access to media platforms. These reach 500-700 young people per year at more than 25 schools and community organizations in Central and Western Washington. Community workshops range from 1-10 hours long, and can focus on one skill (i.e. interviewing) or on story production, where youth make podcasts in small groups.

The Now – Building community & Caring for the whole youth

RadioActive strives to build meaningful relationships between the KUOW community and its youth through providing mentorship, resources and a safe and inclusive environment for youth to grow as individuals and as journalists. RadioActive prioritizes the significance of validation and value when interacting and instructing their youth. Additionally, RadioActive provides a space where youth learn how to grow community among each other. Our youth interviewee shared that 鈥渢here is so much love and respect for everyone there鈥� and described how he felt esteemed as a contributing member to KUOW rather than just another student.听

How have you seen your program impact the lives of youth/you/the community? Why did you choose this program?

Participant: 鈥�As a freshman, I didn鈥檛 have much interest in [journalism]. I thought, 鈥業 have no plans over the summer, I might as well give it a shot鈥�, and I was very nervous. After a week, I was excited to come back. I chose the program partly for the money and because I had nothing to do, but I fell in love with it. I鈥檝e made new friends and I get to produce my own content. I keep coming back because I have new things to love about it鈥�.[With RadioActive] I took a big step forward in feeling confident in sharing my stories….It was a real learning experience. We were never treated like children even though we are 15-18. We are treated like coworkers – we are treated like we are responsible… We don鈥檛 like to use the word 鈥渒id鈥�, we use the word 鈥測outh鈥� which I appreciated. We are encouraged to try new things.鈥�

Kyle: 鈥�What did I learn about youth? They have wisdom, they have lived experience, they are smart, they are open, they are kind, they are funny, they have value in terms of their lives. They can bring that to the world- those collective stories and we need that…[RadioActive] is the best thing I do, it bolsters me in times I have gone through in COVID and personally – I turn to these young people and my coworkers and their stories and it lifts me, it gives me comfort and it inspires me and I want to put my energy into it. I want to share it with more people…I think this is the best youth program in the country. There are other youth media programs, but they are not as robust as this – this is very special…鈥�

Kelsey: 鈥�The impact is real. To watch some of the youth grow into professional radio producers when they came to RadioActive having never heard of public radio is so amazing and delightful. A narrative we hear often 鈥� more often than I expect 鈥� is 鈥業 came in knowing nothing and just looking for a fun summer job, and now I’m applying to college for journalism鈥�…opening up that career path for young people is so cool… We don鈥檛 seek out youth who want to be journalists [for this program], we do the opposite – we seek youth who love storytelling. [These youth] then [leave the program] with a better understanding of media literacy and journalism works..鈥�

Kelsey shares that her favorite aspect of her job is just 鈥渨orking alongside youth to create cool stuff鈥�- it鈥檚 as simple as that. RadioActive is not just work nor a curriculum – it’s fun, creative, challenging, innovative and meaningful.

COVID-19 & Challenges – Navigating a pandemic & addressing new problems

Pivoting from an in-person model to a fully remote environment, RadioActive has overcome adversity during the pandemic to increase accessibility to their program for youth, no matter their situation. Although the team is slowly bringing students back into the recording studio in a hybrid model, the interviewees shared with us the advantages and successes of going remote.

The biggest challenge prior to COVID-19 was commuting. Kyle and Kelsey shared examples of students commuting up to 2 hours by public transportation to come to the RadioActive studio in the U-District. Although he wished to come in person every once in a while to collaborate with peers, our youth interviewee explained that,

鈥�it almost felt natural [going remote] after a while – like we鈥檇 been doing it forever. What I didn鈥檛 expect was to still have that engagement and community online because in person it was so much easier to just hangout with someone…we didn鈥檛 quite have that, but we were still together. When I was facilitating a group with my fellow 2019 members, it was still amazing – there were still sparks. The only issue was that we didn鈥檛 have the nice recording studios – which we didn鈥檛 mind.鈥澨�

Youth members were still able to bond over their days despite the distance apart. He expressed that without the deep connections made from the beginning, the pandemic would鈥檝e been a different experience, but because RadioActive fostered a community for students to come together so well, it felt like nothing had changed.听

As a result of the pandemic, a hybrid model will most likely be permanent since the virtual programming went so well. Kyle explained that there were no great challenges when teaching students how to report individually as it was a common practice done in the professional world of journalism. He shared how RadioActive still maintained engagement during remote learning- by checking-in. Checking-in everyday with students allows for better understanding of what each youth is feeling and going through before beginning work building empathy and connection among one another.

Youth well-being & Youth development

RadioActive鈥檚 goal is to mitigate any barriers that could prevent youth from participating in the program. For example, RadioActive provides food and snacks for all youth members as well as Orca cards and translation services. Youth well-being and development is a priority at RadioActive; they take care of one another like family, truly creating a transformative experience.

RadioActive encourages and helps youth tell their stories that they find more important and meaningful. Kyle shared with us that mentors work alongside youth to brainstorm and experiment with different storytelling techniques to capture their visions and bring it to life. RadioActive allows young journalists to explore their own topics; there is no boundary or limit to the stories that can be told.

The stories that RadioActive journalists share are personal and vulnerable – our participant shared that getting to make his stories about what he wanted to focus on was 鈥渉ealing鈥� and helped with his mental health. Youth have the chance to open up difficult conversations with the community, including with their own family and friends. Our youth interviewee explains the natural challenges for youth journalists to find the courage to be able to share their stories, saying,听

鈥�A natural challenge for anyone that wants to share a story is finding the confidence to share that story…That鈥檚 the same for many other people, they have serious and deep stories they want to share whether that’s about themselves or about someone else – that鈥檚 a huge step…when you get over finding the confidence to share something – it鈥檚 really beautiful to hear someone鈥檚 voice talk about what they鈥檝e been through or something you鈥檝e been going through as well – it鈥檚 just amazing.鈥澨�

Even in a short piece, there are many complex layers that go into creating the story. With 18 years of experience in radio and NPR, Kyle shares that when youth are stuck during the creative process of their story, 鈥�that鈥檚 when mentors come in and go – 鈥榯ry this or try that鈥�, that鈥檚 what a lot of RadioActive is, it鈥檚 just trying stuff and putting it together in a story form鈥�. The ideas of resilience and perseverance are evident in RadioActive鈥檚 approach to youth development, teaching youth to never give up and to always keep moving, no matter the pace you鈥檙e at.听

In the Works – what鈥檚 next for RadioActive?

With so much accomplished in almost the past two decades, what does the future look like for RadioActive? We asked each interviewee about any changes they would like to see or new ideas that would help expand the program.听

Perhaps:

Being able to increase the number of youth served, without sacrificing the depth and richness of the small-cohort experience.
More opportunities for youth to work on other KUOW shows, including the podcasts Seattle Now and The Record
Strengthening relationships and creating new partnerships with surrounding organizations in the area.
New smaller studios throughout the greater Seattle area so students could have more access to recording and working in person, in their own neighborhoods.
Adding a shuttle service for minors so those who live far can be transported safely and efficiently to the KUOW studios.

As learned from their own firsthand experience, innovation blooms from ideas and visions come to life when challenges are overcome. Although a seasoned youth program and a model program for so many, both locally and nationally, RadioActive鈥檚 desire to always be better for their youth is a testament to their commitment of helping their youth grow as both better individuals and journalists.听
