The 91探花honors dear friend and supporter, Floyd Jones

Floyd JonesI was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Floyd Jones, a dear friend, alumnus and tireless supporter of the 91探花. Floyd embodied the notion that philanthropy can change lives and make the world a better place. Throughout his years of giving to the 91探花and across our region, Floyd was always motivated by a deep and joyful commitment to lifting others up.

I鈥檝e had the privilege of knowing Floyd for a long time, and over the years, I have seen how his profound generosity has had an incredible impact on students, faculty and staff. I will miss him very much, but his legacy will live on at the UW. Floyd gave to a number of causes through the UW, but I worked most closely with him on two, his gift to the Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse, reflecting his love of the arts, and his support for the 91探花Women鈥檚 Center, reflecting his commitment to women鈥檚 leadership and empowerment.

Floyd lived an extraordinary life, the son of Missouri sharecroppers who beat the odds, earning a degree from the 91探花which led him to a successful career in finance. But he never forgot what it was like to face hardships. Through his philanthropy, he worked to level the playing field for others, by advancing women鈥檚 leadership, combating inequality and helping the arts to thrive. Floyd鈥檚 philanthropy in our community included support for the ACLU, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Union Gospel Mission and Planned Parenthood, and his generosity has left the world a more vibrant, healthy and just place.

Our deepest condolences go out to Floyd鈥檚 long-time partner, Alene and his children, Steven and Laura. He will be greatly missed, but his impact will live on in the lives of students, faculty, community members and those of us who were fortunate enough to call him a friend.
