2022 91探花Tacoma MLK Celebration –聽Commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. often spoke of creating a Beloved Community 鈥� a community in which poverty and racism do not exist. This vision of justice for all people inspired thousands of everyday people to stand up, march and fight for racial and economic justice throughout the Civil Rights Movement. As we begin a new academic quarter and a new year, it is a vision that continues to inspire our own community’s work toward it.
Each of us must consider, as Dr. King put it, what “qualitative change in our souls as well as quantitative change in our lives” are necessary in order to create . Many pressing issues need our attention: undoing systemic racism; addressing poverty,鈥痟omelessness鈥痑nd inequality; and creating a sense of connectedness and belonging that moves us toward a more just and equitable world.
On Monday, Jan. 鈥�17, our institution will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. We encourage all 91探花 students,鈥痵taff, faculty and academic personnel to engage with the holiday in ways that are personally meaningful, and to consider what it means to infuse the values and ideas that Dr. King represented in all the ways that we serve our public mission 鈥� this week, and every week. Below you’ll find links to鈥�campus and community events as well as resources that allow us to reflect on shared history and deepen personal commitments to present-day justice movements.
