Attention parents: It may be midwinter, but it鈥檚 not too soon to think about summertime options for your school-age children. In fact, registration for the UW鈥檚 Summer Programs for Youth begins on Feb. 7.
The 91探花offers lively educational programs for elementary, middle and high school students, beginning in late June and running into mid-August. 91探花Summer Programs for Youth are created and overseen by the 91探花Educational Outreach Program.
The programs are all open to the public, but 91探花staff and faculty have a sort of head start, with a certain number of reserved spaces set aside for their children if they register by March 1.
Paul Highsmith, assistant director of academic programs for 91探花extension, said the summer programs have been offered for 20 years or more. They began as a way to provide child care for children of faculty and staff, but expanded into educational offerings due to the wide array of teaching talent and facilities available on campus.
Elementary school sessions incorporate art, science, drama and creative writing through a different theme each session, and the themes are new each year, Highsmith said. Session titles for grades one through six, for example, are 鈥淯nder the Sea,鈥� 鈥淔light鈥� and 鈥淚t鈥檚 About Time.鈥� A summer day camp at the Washington Park Arboretum also is among the options.
Courses abound for middle and high school students as well. Topics for middle school sessions include studies and activities about law, art and architecture, writing, robotics and inventions.
