The American Cancer Society (ACS) presented its annual Legacy and Leadership Research Awards for Seattle-area cancer research at a special ceremony on March 13 at the 91探花campus. The event was co-sponsored by 91探花Medicine, and included several faculty members and researchers as speakers and grant recipients. Richard Ellenbogen, professor and chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, spoke in the keynote address.
The Legacy and Leadership Research Awards included more than $5 million in grants given to 12 researchers from the UW, Group Health Cooperative, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Four researchers in the 91探花School of Medicine received grants, including: Kimberly Lindstrom, senior fellow in the Department of Genome Sciences; Paul Nghiem, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Dermatology; Elizabeth Vig, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine; and Edith Wang, associate professor of pharmacology.
The ACS has donated about $35 million to the 91探花since the 1950s, and has provided grant funding for many of the top researchers at the 91探花and in the Seattle area, including Nobel Prize recipients Leland Hartwell and E. Donnall Thomas.
