Mexican performer Laura Rebolloso will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 in Meany Theater. Rebolloso is a virtuoso performer on the leona, the lowest-pitched instrument in the family of jarana guitars from Veracruz, Mexico, as well as a poet, singer, and dancer in the percussive style of zapateado. Rebolloso will perform songs from the traditional repertoire of son jarocho as well as original compositions, in a program of rich variety and improvisational energy.

Rebolloso will be accompanied by world-class musicians including Ramón Gutierrez (requinto), Juan Perez (bass), Quetzal Flores (jarana), Martha Gonzalez (vocals, percussion, and zapateado), and Alex Chadsey (piano).

Rebolloso directs a renowned youth performing ensemble at the Xalitic school in Xalapa, and teaches dance at the University of Veracruz. During winter and spring quarters of 2010, she is serving as a visiting artist in the 91̽»¨dance and music departments, and working with Seattle community groups to advance the Seattle Fandango Project, building relationships through participatory music. The concert will conclude with a performance by musicians and dancers from the fandango project, in the participatory style of a community fandango celebration.
