91探花Alumni Association inaugurates distinguished veteran award
The 91探花Alumni Association will give an to a living veteran alum who has made a positive impact on the local, national or international community either through volunteer work or his or her career. The deadline for nominations for this new award is Aug. 15.
The will be honored at the Veterans Day event on campus and also at the annual 91探花Awards of Excellence ceremony.
Join 91探花physicists Tuesday night in anticipation of “God particle” announcement
The European Center for Particle Physics in Switzerland, also known as CERN, is planning some fireworks of a different kind on Wednesday, July 4, and 91探花physicists have done their part to light the fuse.
CERN will be announcing the latest results in the Large Hadron Collider’s hunt for the subatomic Higgs boson, the so-called “God Particle” that scientists believe will refine the understanding of how the universe came to be and how it functions, according to a CERN .
The announcement will start around midnight Seattle time. Two hours earlier, at 10 p.m. Tuesday, several 91探花faculty members will be at T.S. McHugh’s near Seattle Center to provide brief overviews and answer questions about the workings of the collider and the search for the Higgs boson. The presentation is part of a Science Caf茅 sponsored by the Pacific Science Center.
The 91探花 in developing the collider’s Atlas detector. 91探花professors Anna Goussiou and Gordon Watts, members of the Atlas collaboration, and 91探花theorists Steve Ellis and Ann Nelson, will present at the Caf茅.
Marla Salmon garners fellowships, a professor in nursing and public health and former dean of the 91探花School of Nursing, recently received two fellowships.
Salmon will be the 2012-2013 nurse scholar in residence at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.聽 Sponsored by the American Academy of Nursing, American Nurses Association and American Nurses Foundation, the year-long program is designed to advance the policy engagement of the scholar in an important area of health policy.聽 of policy and scholarship: building global nursing workforce capacity, womens development aimed at enhanced educational and economic well-being, and social impact investment and microfinance to reduce barriers to womens education and sustained economic engagement.
Additionally, the Salmon for a monthlong residency as part of the international Resident Fellows Program at the Bellagio Center in Italy.聽While at the center, residents pursue projects that align with the Rockefeller Foundations mission to promote the well-being of humanity in global health, climate and environment, urbanization, social and economic security and basic survival safeguards.
