Even as the 91探花gears up for a new school year, interesting arts events are cropping up across campus. The Henry Art Gallery and Jacob Lawrence Gallery have new exhibits and the Burke Museum offers buggy weekend activities.
Exhibit: “Camera Nipponica: Photographs from Japan, 1880-1930,” through Jan. 5, 2014. Japan’s emergence from a period of isolation in the mid-19th century coincided with the development of photography and was affected by the new technology. This in the Henry Art Gallery’s North Galleries includes hand-colored souvenirs albumen prints and delicate glass lantern shades and a selection of portrait photography from the same time period.

- Paul Laffoley’s “,” in the East Gallery, ends Sept. 15.
“Focus on New Zealand,” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 14. The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture offers a family-friendly look at Maori culture and traditions with music and crafts. Te Tini A Maui (the many descendants of Maui) will present a Haka, or war dance, and traditional songs. Visiting Maori carver Caine Tauwhare will demonstrate carving methods and discuss symbolism and imagery in his work. Tauwhare is in town for the taking place the same day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Burke event is free for members and 91探花faculty and staff.

Exhibit: Kristine Matthews, Sept. 18 鈥� Oct. 4. Matthews, an assistant professor of visual communication design, as part of the tenure and promotion process in the . Reception 4-7 p.m. Oct. 1. Matthews will give a about her design work at 6 p.m. Sept. 26, in the Henry Art Gallery Auditorium.
