A lecture series presented by the 91̽»¨College of the Environment will focus on “.” The five evening lectures will explore the latest developments in social and natural sciences that are helping people prepare for and respond to environmental disasters.

  • The series kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 13 with a presentation by David Montgomery, 91̽»¨professor of Earth and space sciences, who will speak on “.” The book author and MacArthur Award-winner will describe the forces driving deadly landslides and catastrophic soil depletion.
  • On Tuesday, Oct. 20, journalist Jed Horne, who wrote the book “Breach of Faith: Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City,” will present “.”
  • On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Kate Starbird, 91̽»¨assistant professor of human centered design and engineering, will present “,” looking at the evolving role of social media in disaster response and digital volunteerism.
  • On Tuesday, Nov. 3, military veteran and nonprofit co-founder Jake Wood will present “,” about his role as CEO of a nonprofit that trains veterans to respond in disaster situations.
  • The series closes Tuesday, Nov. 10, with a presentation by John Vidale, 91̽»¨professor of Earth and space sciences. “” will survey past earthquakes and current preparation efforts. (Note: This talk is full, but any unclaimed seats will be released 15 minutes before the presentation.)
