Ladino Day 2020 鈥 Revolutionizing Ladino: From the Printing Press to the Smartphone

The 8th annual Ladino Day at the 91探花 will explore the intersection of Ladino and technology over the last century, and how revolutions in print and on the web have impacted the language over time.

We鈥檒l begin with a multimedia talk by听Dr.听Devin E. Naar,听Professor in Sephardic Studies听补苍诲听Associate Professor of History,听on the history of the Ladino press in the Ottoman Empire and the United States. Dr. Naar will then host virtual conversations with听Rachel Amado Bortnick,听founder of听, and听Dr.听Carlos Yebra L贸pez,听creator of the Ladino module on听, a language learning app.

Commemorating the Centennial of the Negro Leagues: Racial Justice, Professional Baseball, and American Society

Join the听 91探花Department of History for an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Negro Leagues in professional baseball.

The event features scholars听Leslie Heaphy听(Kent State University, Stark) and听Louis Moore听(Grand Valley State University), former Mariners player听Alvin Davis, Mariners sportscaster听Dave Sims, and the Vice President of the Negro League Baseball Museum, Inc.听Ray Doswell. Professor of History Emeritus听Quintard Taylor听will moderate.

Confronting Systemic Racism in Communication Sciences and Academia

Funded by and named in honor of Professor Emeritus Fred Minifie, the Minifie Lecture Series showcases research from eminent scientists in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The 鈥渉uman鈥 is a historically constructed category with political and social agency, and in Western science and culture sets up a hierarchical distinction from other animals and forms of life. In this process of differentiation, animality has been racialized, and used as a means of limiting freedom and protections to members of humankind that threaten a fantasy of white superiority. Ragamala Dance Company: Written in Water and听The Fires of Creativity

罢丑别听Meany Center听hosts the Ragamala Dance Company for two special events: Written in Water and the Fires of Creativity.听In the visually stunning听Written in Water,听Ragamalaexplores the universal paradigm of a seeker on a journey to connect the human with the transcendent and reveal mysteries within the self. In the Fires of Creativity,听Meany Center Artistic Director Michelle Witt interviews Ranee Ramaswamy, Artistic Director of听Ragamala听Dance Company, and explores听the creative foundations of their new work-in-progress,听The Fires of Varanasi.

Drive-In at On the Boards with the Henry Art Gallery听

On the Boards and the Henry Art Gallery are pleased to co-present a three-night screening series. Curated by the Henry, this multi-evening event features work by a variety of artists who use moving images to explore issues critical to the present moment and our collective future, from migration and global trade to the reparative power of representation. In their own way, each of these artworks considers the various ways bodies move and are moved and shaped, whether by personal memory, historical narrative, or institutions of power.
