IMSD-affiliated students are eligible to participate in paid, year-long and/or summer research experiences. IMSD students who participate for the entire 18-month research period receive 1,480 hours of laboratory, technical and methodological skills and expertise. Across three years of an annual online evaluation survey administered to IMSD students participating in this research experience, the majority of students responded that they (a) were highly engaged in their research experience; (b) enjoyed it; (c) and developed a strong relationship with their mentors.
Recent IMSD students who participated have been selected for other prestigious research program experiences including:
- OTS NAPIRE Summer Research in Costa Rica
- Internships in the Harvard University School of Public Health Multidisciplinary International Research Training (HSPH MIRT) Program which offers participants a three-month, all-expense paid (travel, housing, stipend) mentored internship in countries including Thailand, Republic of Georgia, Ethiopia, Peru and Ecuador
- $50,000 UNCF-MERCK Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards
- Internships in the 91探花 Undergraduate Research Program ( 91探花URP), Summer Amgen Scholars Program, Mary Gates Research Scholarship Program and the Annual/Summer 91探花Undergraduate Research Symposiums
- The 10鈥�12 week National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and 91探花 鈥淪tipends for Training Aspiring Researchers (STAR) paid internship program (approximately $6,200 salary/housing allowance)
IMSD is a 10鈥搘eek (June 24th鈥揂ugust 30th) program in the summer and nine months during the academic year. It has laboratory positions for students interested in a biomedical research internship experience. IMSD students are on the 91探花 payroll.
All students must have successfully completed one year of undergraduate studies including at least one year鈥搇ong series in calculus or science with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The IMSD Program focuses its resources on under鈥搑epresented (i.e., African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic/Mexican American) students that are US citizens or permanent residents, however no student will be denied the opportunity to apply to or participate in the program.
