Each year, thousands of 91探花undergraduates engage in service and leadership projects on campus and in the community, bringing the classroom beyond the four walls that house desks and chairs. At the annual Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership, students showcase their work and learning related to these projects. Students, staff, faculty and community members hear about these dynamic experiences from the students firsthand.

Dream Project freshmen reflect on year 1 at the UW

The Dream Project assists low-income and first-generation high school students in attaining higher education. Students in the Dream Project overcome incredible obstacles to attend college, but the challenges鈥攁nd rewards鈥攄on鈥檛 end once they step foot on campus. Three Dream Project students describe their journey to UW, what they鈥檝e learned their first year, and how it feels to give back (also, how important the bowling alley is and when to stop calling your mother!)


Entrepreneur Kirsten Rogers aims to take a bite out of cancer

In 2013, David Rogers was retired and living his dream, having made his boat his home, sailing with his wife through the Sea of Cortez, when he became very ill. He was advised to return to the States, where he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, most people feel an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Not so David鈥檚 daughter, Kirsten Rogers. Kirsten (鈥05, 鈥10) set out to research all she could about how to best support her father.

Undergraduate research to take over Mary Gates Hall on May 16

On Friday, May 16, more than 1,100 91探花 undergraduates will participate in the 17th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium鈥攁n event that might well be the country鈥檚 largest 鈥渟how and tell鈥 for undergraduate research. The Symposium takes place from 11 a.m.鈥6 p.m. in Mary Gates Hall; select oral presentations will happen in Johnson Hall and visual arts and design presentations will be in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

91探花Dream Project is awarded a $150,000 College Spark Washington Community Grant

The Dream Project at the 91探花 has been awarded a three-year, $150,000 College Spark Washington Community Grant today to enhance its current work by improving its curriculum, materials and training of mentors; and improvements to its data management system to better inform efforts to help students avoid remediation.

91探花students to explore far reaches of the globe by means of unusual fellowship

Fourteen 91探花 students were recently awarded Bonderman Travel Fellowships that will enable them to embark on solo journeys that are at least eight months long and take them to at least two regions and six countries of the world. These fellowships, worth $20,000 each, aim to expose students to the intrinsic, often life-changing, benefits of international travel.

Undergraduate creates device to help diagnose cancer

Chris Burfeind is a senior studying mechanical engineering and researching microfluidic devices in Eric Seibel’s lab. With the help of the lab, Chris has created a credit card-sized device that can analyze biopsy tissues and help diagnose pancreatic cancer in minutes.
