In the Loop Newsletter
November 19, 2025
Dear Huskies,
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! This year, it falls on November 27, and while not everyone celebrates this holiday, it鈥檚 a great reminder to take a moment and think about who鈥攚e鈥檙e grateful for. Even a short 鈥渢hank you鈥 message to someone you care about 聽can brighten their day and help you feel more connected, especially when you鈥檙e far from home. As you nurture these connections, remember to take good care of yourself, too. In this newsletter, we will sharing tips to help you enjoy winter and the holiday season here in Seattle.
Embrace the Winter Weather
Winter is settling in, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors until spring. The colder months bring plenty of cozy and fun opportunities! Try grabbing a hot chocolate at a local cafe, hosting a movie night with friends, or cooking a favorite comfort food from home. Seattle farmers markets also carry lots of winter goodies for you to explore. Around the city, you will find ice skating, holiday light displays, and winter festivals (stay tuned for more info on this in the next newsletter!). Embracing these experiences can help you create warm memories during the cold months and feel more like home in your new community.
Before diving into winter activities, make sure you have the right gears, especially if this is your first time experiencing truly cold weather. A warm insulated coat (bonus if it鈥檚 waterproof!), waterproof boots, and comfortable layers can make a big difference. And don鈥檛 worry, staying warm doesn鈥檛 have to be expensive. Seattle has many thrift stores where you can find affordable, good-quality winter clothing. Start looking early so you鈥檙e prepared.
Smart Shopping: Black Friday & Cyber Monday
Speaking of preparation, your winter wardrobe might get a boost from upcoming sales. As Thanksgiving gets closer, you鈥檒l start hearing a lot about “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday, two of the biggest shopping events in the U.S. Stores offer huge discounts both in person and online. The term “Black Friday” comes from retailers going from “in the red” (loss) to 鈥渋n the black鈥 (profit) during the holiday season. These sales can be a great chance to get winter essentials at lower prices. Just be sure to shop smart鈥攎ake a list, compare prices, and set a budge so you only buy what you truly need.
Year-End Financial Planning
Since we鈥檙e talking about budgets, the end of the year is also a great time to check in on your financial health. Here are a few helpful reminders:
- Track your holiday spending: It is easy to overspend, so set limits ahead of time.
- Review your budget: Look back at your recent spending and adjust for the new year if necessary.
- Plan for winter quarter: Consider upcoming tuition, books, housing, and daily expenses.
- Budget for winter break: Whether you鈥檙e traveling, staying in Seattle, or exploring nearby, plan for those costs.
- Start or grow an emergency fund: Even small contributions add up and can give you peace of mind.
