How isÌýtheÌýSeattle winter treating you? You may have noticed that winter here brings chilly temperatures and shorter days. If you are feelingÌýaÌýbit down during this time, don’t worry.ÌýInÌýthis newsletter, we will share with youÌýtheÌýscience behind wintertime rhythm changes, tips to help you thrive duringÌýtheÌýwinter months and plenty of 91̽»¨and community activities that you can participateÌýin.
°Â¾±²Ô³Ù±ð°ùÌýinÌýtheÌýPacific Northwest may feel differently dependingÌýonÌýwhere you are from. If you come fromÌýaÌýwarmer climate, such as Brazil, India, Kenya or parts of Southeast Asia, you might findÌýtheÌýwet, chilly days more challenging to adjust to.ÌýOnÌýtheÌýother hand, if you’re accustomed to colder winters, such as thoseÌýinÌýCanada, Russia or Scandinavian countries, you might appreciateÌýtheÌýregion’s relatively mild temperatures and missÌýtheÌýsnowy daysÌýatÌýhome.
Regardless of how you remember winters to be, it isÌýaÌýgood idea to prepare for what this season might bring. First and foremost, dress appropriately forÌýtheÌýweather to protect you from catchingÌýaÌýcold and keep you warm and dryÌýinÌýtheÌýSeattle drizzle. Second,ÌýtheÌýlong absence of sunlight can takeÌýaÌýtollÌýonÌýyour well-being. InvestingÌýinÌýaÌýhappy lamp (a.k.aÌýfull spectrum light) can give youÌýaÌýdaily energy boost especiallyÌýonÌýtheÌýdarker days. You can also check out light therapy lamps for 30-minute intervalsÌýatÌýtheÌýHealth Science Library for free. Finally, winter isÌýaÌýtime for rest and restoration. Incorporating plenty of root and earth vegetables as well as warm soups and broths can bring you comfort.
Preparing for winter also involves finding joyÌýinÌýseasonal activities. We encourage you to not only brainstorm new ways to enjoyÌýtheÌýseason but also make concrete plans to spend quality time with your friends. AsÌýtheÌýacademic quarter tends to pick up pace quickly, now is an ideal moment to reach out to friends and set aside some time to explore new activities together.

Additionally, we welcomeÌýtheÌýLunar New YearÌýonÌýJan 29 this year. Lunar New Year is an important festival celebratedÌýinÌýmany Asian cultures, including China, Vietnam, Korea, among others. It marksÌýtheÌýbeginning ofÌýtheÌýnew year basedÌýonÌýtheÌýlunar calendar, which followsÌýtheÌýcycles ofÌýtheÌýmoon. It isÌýaÌýholiday richÌýinÌýcultural significance, symbolizing new beginnings, family unity andÌýtheÌýhope for prosperity and good fortuneÌýinÌýtheÌýcoming year. If you are celebrating or want to beÌýaÌýpart of it this year, don’t miss outÌýonÌýtheÌýLunar New Year FairÌýatÌýWing Luke MuseumÌýonÌýFeb 3 from 10:00Ìýa.m. to 3:00 p.m. Further, Seattle Center is also hostingÌýaÌýVietnamese New Year celebrationÌýonÌýtheÌýsame weekend with good eats and festivities.
