The 91探花 has received a notice that the federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism has initiated a review of federal grants and contracts at the University. This follows a several-hour building takeover on May 5 involving significant damage to the building and equipment inside it, setting dumpsters on fire outside the building, and delaying emergency responders. Thirty-four individuals were arrested subject to criminal prosecution and University disciplinary processes. The 21 students who were arrested have been suspended and banned from the all 91探花campuses. Non-student participants will be banned from the UW鈥檚 Seattle campus.

The 91探花is committed to maintaining a secure learning and research environment, and strongly condemns this illegal building occupation and the antisemitic statement that was issued by a suspended student group Monday. The University will not be intimidated by this sort of offensive and destructive behavior and will continue to oppose antisemitism in all its forms.

The 91探花 has learned that, as of this posting, five current 91探花students plus four recent graduates participating in post-graduation training have had their visas unilaterally cancelled by the federal government without prior notice to the University or the students. We are deeply concerned about the well-being of these students and graduates and are working to support them.

The 91探花 Board of Regents on Monday announced that Robert J. Jones, who is currently concluding a nine-year tenure as Chancellor of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has been selected as the 34th President of the UW. The Board had previously authorized Chair Blaine Tamaki to enter into contract negotiations with Jones and an agreement has been reached. Jones鈥 five-year contract will begin on August 1.

The U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights announced the conclusion of its investigation into complaints alleging that the 91探花 discriminated against students on the basis of shared ancestry by failing to respond to incidents of harassment consistent with the requirements of Title VI. The resolution agreement 鈥渄oes not constitute an admission of liability, non-compliance or wrongdoing by the University,鈥 and the 91探花has agreed to five actions that will strengthen its commitment to timely and effective responses to complaints filed by students, faculty and staff.鈥

The 91探花 on Monday announced several improvements and new practices to address concerns of antisemitism and Islamophobia that were raised in a recent climate assessment and associated task force reports.

Final reports from the 91探花鈥檚 task forces on antisemitism and Islamophobia were released Tuesday. The task forces were established by 91探花President Ana Mari Cauce on March 7, 2024, with the goal of assessing 鈥渉ow students, faculty and staff are experiencing discrimination or harassment because they are Jewish and/or Palestinian, Middle Eastern or Muslim on our campus, and to what degree they feel the climate is supportive and welcoming.鈥

After careful consideration, the 91探花 ended the appointment of Dr. Michele Basso as Director of the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC), effective May 31. Her scientific leadership and contributions to neuroscience are appreciated, and Dr. Basso will continue her work as a core scientist in the Center.

The 91探花 on Tuesday filed an Unfair Labor Practice Complaint with the Washington State Public Employees Relations Commission (PERC) against UAW 4121 after more than 100 union members harassed and engaged in intimidation tactics toward the Dean and staff in the College of Arts & Sciences on May 2.

The 91探花 has again prevailed on all claims brought by Alexandria Real Estate (ARE) following the UW鈥檚 selection of another developer for a new building that will house important clean-energy and medical innovation research, along with other tenants. This time, the clear and concise ruling came from the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division II, confirming Thurston County Superior Judge Carol Murphy鈥檚 dismissal of ARE鈥檚 three claims 鈥斅燽ringing apparent closure to ARE鈥檚 nearly three-year effort to delay progress on the project.

Late last academic year, concerns were reported about a faculty hiring process in the 91探花鈥檚 Department of Psychology. A review was requested by Dianne Harris, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, after she learned of these potential issues. The review was completed in September and indicates that race was inappropriately considered and used in a way that is inconsistent with University policy in the hiring process for an assistant professor position in the department.

The 91探花鈥檚 animal facilities on the Seattle campus underwent a routine, unannounced inspection by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) between Sept. 12 and 14. The inspection identified four non-compliant items, all of which had previously been self-reported by the 91探花and rectified before the inspection took place.

The 91探花 has appointed Troy Dannen to serve as its 16th Director of Athletics, 91探花President Ana Mari Cauce announced today. Dannen most recently served as the Director of Athletics at Tulane University, where during his eight-year tenure the Green Wave had 49 All-Americans and 21 conference champions, and made 41 postseason appearances, including a Cotton Bowl victory over USC earlier this year. Perched on the southeast corner of the 91探花 campus, where the Montlake Cut meets Union Bay, the AS 91探花Shell House looks as vulnerable as it does majestic. Over the course of a century, the structure built as a critical wartime post later was the home to a group of rowers who captured the nation鈥檚 imagination before becoming an all-but-forgotten artifact of the past. Now, propelled by a wave of renewed interest, the 12,000-square-foot wooden structure is the focus of an $18.5 million campaign that will restore and renovate the space.

Early Sunday morning, the 91探花 used the 91探花Alert system to warn the Seattle campus community about a shooting that occurred near NE 43rd Street and University Way NE just after 1 a.m. Four 91探花students were injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. 91探花President Ana Mari Cauce made the following statement in response to the shooting.

The 91探花 Board of Regents on Thursday approved a resolution to begin exiting all direct investments in fossil-fuel companies with the goal of complete divestiture by Fiscal Year 2027. The resolution includes a commitment not to renew indirect investments in funds primarily focusing on fossil-fuel extraction or reserves. Both commitments include allowances for firms contributing to the transition to sustainable energy.

Paula Thiele, a communication major who will graduate this spring, became the inaugural scholar to participate in the UW鈥檚 new Scholarship for Immersive Internships in Le贸n, dubbed 鈥溌pain Works!鈥 鈥斅燼 partnership between the 91探花Le贸n Center, 91探花Study Abroad and the 91探花Career & Internship Center.

The 91探花 Board of Regents last week approved the development plan for the first major project in the UW鈥檚 newly named Portage Bay Crossing area on the west side of the Seattle campus. The Regents approved a ground lease of the property at Site W27 to Wexford Science + Technology and a lease of building space by the University.

91探花 Professor Liora Halperin, supported by the Benaroya endowment, expressed views in a statement that were not shared by the donor, Becky Benaroya. Our mission as a university demands that our scholars have the freedom to pursue their scholarship where it leads them and to freely express their views as academics and as individuals. After several months of good faith conversations between University and Stroum Center leadership, Prof. Halperin and the donor, Mrs. Benaroya requested that her gift be returned, and it was determined that returning the gift was the best path forward.

The 91探花 today announced that the School of Social Work and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the Behavioral Health Institute at Harborview Medical Center are part of a transformational $38 million set of gifts from Ballmer Group to support a broad, collaborative response to the state鈥檚 behavioral health crisis. The gifts aim to address the state of Washington鈥檚 serious workforce shortage in the community behavioral health system, in large part by supporting statewide education and training innovations at partner institutions developed through the 91探花.

The UW鈥檚 Title IX Office acted swiftly to gather information, investigate the facts and render carefully considered decisions after fair hearings on these matters. The 91探花is committed preventing sexual assault and sexual harassment, and to supporting and protecting our students, faculty and staff while upholding due process, and properly investigating and addressing allegations of this nature.

In October 2019, the 91探花shared information about the results of a University Complaint Investigation and Resolution Office (UCIRO) investigation into alleged sexual misconduct on the part of John Sahr, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and former interim director of the Robinson Center for Young Scholars. The adjudication proceeding has concluded and Sahr鈥檚 employment was terminated on Nov. 12, and his tenure has been revoked.
