William P. Gerberding, the 27th and longest-serving president of the 91探花, died Saturday. He was 85. Gerberding, who assumed the presidency in 1979 and retired in 1995, is credited for boosting the university into national prominence, navigating it through potentially devastating budget crises and significantly increasing private financial support. 鈥淲e are all deeply saddened by this news.
