91探花students to volunteer in rural Washington classrooms for an Alternative Spring Break
Each spring, some 50 91探花 undergraduates forgo the typical spring break trappings of beaches and flip-flops, choosing instead to volunteer in rural and tribal communities throughout Washington state as part of the 91探花Pipeline Project鈥檚 Alternative Spring Break program.

Anthropology students and Pike Place Senior Center members connect over oral histories
The Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center connects 91探花classes with community-based organizations so students experience first-hand what they are learning about and so organizations benefit from student service. “Hello in There” looks at Holly Barker’s anthropology class, a reciprocal learning experience for both students and members of the Pike Place Senior Center.
Mary Gates Endowment for Students announces annual scholarship awardees
The Mary Gates Endowment for Students at the 91探花 has announced a total of 112 awardees for its respected scholarship program. The applicants were selected to receive the award for their work on research and leadership projects.

91探花 Received National Recognition for Community Service, Named to President鈥檚 Honor Roll
The 91探花 has been named to the 2009 President鈥檚 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The 91探花is the only public, 4-year institution in Washington state to receive this recognition this year.
91探花 bioengineering student awarded prestigious Luce Scholarship
Jesse Burk-Rafel, a senior Honors student in bioengineering, was recently selected as a 2010 11 Luce Scholar. A native of Bainbridge Island and graduate of Bainbridge High School, Jesse is the first 91探花student to receive the scholarship as an undergraduate since 1977 and one of 18 nationwide to receive this scholarship this year.
